MSR PUMPS do we think the new ones will last?

My dragonfly stoves pump has surprise surprise... cracks.
I do think the stove is fantastic. I have only used kerosene (to be safe-ish with the crack) and it burns that brilliantly.

While I would prefer an omnifuel the chances of getting a second hand one are slim.
I am leaning towards gettin a new pump but would love to hear what others think of the new pumps as I have no experience with them.
Do you think a new pump will still be boiling my spuds in a few years time?

Depending on what color your pump is, MSR may send you a new one on full warranty. If it is blue and orange, you pay $20 and shipping and they send you the new one. Still a good deal.
I sent mine on Monday, and it arrived on Friday. Depending on where you live, it may take longer.
The new pump is well made, and I suspect will last a lot longer than the old one used to.

 

Thanks for that... I googled (actually yahooed but thats not a word yet) silver solder.
It melts at a low temperature but is it low enough to use on plastic? How is this done?
The crack is one caused by over tightening the control valve, well actually I think its caused buy the pump being shoddy.
Would be great to fix it, new ones are around $80 nz dollars.

I have emailed MSR to see if I can get a replacement that way, I have no receipt of course.
The pump is a odd blue with a red plunger.

Congrats on getting a very nice stove in the Dragonfly! I think you will like it, once you get it setup with a new pump. I have worked with most of MSR's pumps, over many years, and find that the newest one is the most robust of any they have offered to date. I think you would be well advised to get one. Why not join REI, here in the States, and wait for one of their "20% off" deals, as they have going right now? In fact, if you join up now, you may well be able to order your new MSR pump at a 20% discount, right now. Worth check out, anyway, especially if MSR does not come through for you. But, first, see what MSR will do, as they just may help you get a new pump for your Dragonfly.

Unfortunately, you cannot use silver solder on your plastic pump. That would work for a metal pump, possibly, but when the plastic MSR ones break, it's trash time, unfortunately!! Keep it for the parts it may be able to offer you, but I'd recommend that you do not use it. I've had one melt down on me, and believe me, it was NOT an enjoyable experience!!! P.S. By the way, the red and blue pump was one of the worst dogs that MSR every developed, unfortunately! My own Dragonfly, which I bought brand new, had that same pump, and it broke first time out of the chute!! So, don't feel like the Lone Ranger about your own red and blue (POS) MSR pump!! The new one is MUCH better!!

 

Um, duh. I did not check where you are hailing from NZ! That changes the game somewhat. I am not sure what MSR would say to you aboaut warranty. Hope they are not scared of a customer far away.

 

I believe the latest pump was introduced after years of complaints & to secure a miltary contract as the pump had to be beefed up.

 

I got one of them blue red pumps too.
The tags that hold the pump in fell off one mine.But the rest goes.

May contact MSR Aust and see what they say. Or is the offer only from the MSR facatory???

Did you have a chance to check out joining REI, yet? You can do it online, I believe. If you do join, I think they will immediately extend their special "20% off one full-priced item" deal to you. Can someone give a run down of the various MSR pumps and whether they're good or trash?

I've heard the original yellow/black/metal ones are good.

The latest red/dark grey ones are good.

Red/blue are crap.

What about the previous red/light gray?

Others?

MSR US will not support you in NZ been there tried that and failed.

Call Ampro in wellington they are the distributor of MSR in NZ they May help. All of the pump trade in schemes etc our US friends talk about dont seem to apply to NZ.

I have the yellow pump which is fine and the black and grey one which is less robust than the yellow but works ok. IRRC the Dragonfly needs it's own pump so i think your choices are the red and blue or the new Duraseal pump.

Well I have the new pump and I have to say it seems to be much higher quality than the old one!
Once I have mastered releasing the pressure with-out getting kero on my hands I will be away laughing.
Also included in the box was a new wind guard so its all good!

 

Mate! spend some of ya pinger and buy a primus omnifuel. You wont regret it. Its fun to fiddle with, burns anything and the pump is great. If ya get a Primus Eta pot, you will have the best combo for cooking. Hey, thanks for the Opti 8 and Primus #5. great projects!

No Problem. I hope you enjoy them. In fact I sold them so I could buy the dragonfly. I will get a omnifuel one day when second hand ones are a dime a dozen on trademe.
For now I am very happy with the dragonfly. It came with a full service kit and trillium base so it should be sweet for years to come.
If anyone is wondering the trillium base if brilliant!

 

The Omnifuel is great, works very well and burns gas, but to be honest, the Nova still has the edge IMHO

 

Would this change your opinion somewhat? Nova is at 12 o'clock, and Omni is at 3 o'clock.

 

I think that might be the dragonfly at 12. Maybe the nova at 6?
I have been wrong before.
