I have a Coleman single burner stove. The red valve leaks from inside the stem. I took the nut off but I cant get it out. I dont want to break anything. Is this a simple shoot some carb cleaner in a wait or would I have some packing to replace once I get it out? I looked a tthe coleman website and they have the entire assembly for sale for about 11 dollars. Has anyone had ant luck repairing this leak instead of replacing the eentire assembly? The stove works otherwise, Im just afraid of not being able to find it once it blows up.
11 dollars isnt that much but I can get another one off of craigslist for 10 or 15 dollars that works. At least thats my mentality. Ill try the nut tightening and see how much it can stand. I was looking at the thread about the substitute packing and was thinking about trying that. thanks ----- I got my wrench and tightened it up pretty good. Not enough to be on the verge of stripping anything but cranked it down several more times than what it was originally and it seem sto be okay now. THANKS a bunch. Ill have to remember that trick for all these other stoves and lanterns I got. I have two other 502 sporters. THe 61 model (i think its 61 off the top of my head works great, but the 88 version goes out if I turn it all the way up).
Coleman's 400 series happens to share the design, and the small nut under the control is supposed to be tightened, as the leak develops over the course of usage. The manual that accompanies the stove advises to do exactly that.
hmmm. Makes you think about when there no more nut tightening to be done dont it. I still have a couple turns on it probably. Maybe the next time it leaks I tighten it again and then sell it lol. Works good. I like the 502 with the red knob I got better. They all do the same thing though. I took my 8r to my friends house and lit it. He asked my why it took so long to light. I told him to shut up. I dont have to pump the crap out of this one.
The manual indicates that you could tighten a little at a time until it does lot leak. Eventually it bottoms out, and it leaks no more.
