    Hi all,

Humor me a Coleman question: I'm looking around for an old 2-burner and was wondering what the preferences were of the folks here that might use them. Specifically, I'm looking at some vintage 413's and 425's, white gas models.

Is there any reason to prefer one over the other? Does one have a better reputation for reliability than the other?

Most importantly, can I use the Coleman folding camp oven on both of them?

    Thanks in advance,
    Ridge.

i have a few old suitcase stoves and they all seem the same too me..i do perfer the ones with the fold out legs that get the stove off the table.the oven was made to work with those stoves so there should be no problem there-

I have three 425s, two As and an F.

It's been ages since I used my oven(almost thirty years) but I felt that the 425 was a tad small for use with the oven.

But then again, it could be the memory of the screaming kids and cranky wife that cause me to remember it that way.

413s are just bigger. More room for whatever pots/oven you use on them. I think that for car camping they are the winner. :D/ MHO

I have had both the 413 and 425 circa mid 1970's models. I kept my trusty 413 and gave the 425(from Goodwill $7) to my boyscout troop. Just didn't need two very similar stoves.

I like the larger 413 due to more room for pans and most importantly the oven. If you use the oven on the 425, you won't have much room for a pot or pan on #2. Also the fuel tank on the 413 is larger thus more burn time.

Also a slight preference for the 413 since it is purtier.

One gotcha that I noticed yet again this past weekend camping in Death Valley, is that the second burner requires you to have the primary burner almost at full blast in order for you to have any reasonable flame control on the secondary. I. E. if burner 1 is on simmer, you can't use burner 2 at all. So I guess long story, what I am getting at is burner 1 is best for boiling large quantities of water or running the oven, while burner 2 is for simmering or frying eggs without torching them. But in all cases burner 1 must be lit before you can use #2.

What I really want to get is a three burner one of these days.

Found this 413G a couple of weeks ago at the metal scrapyard next to the weighing scale.

"Is that for sale?" says I.

"Yeah. Some guy just dropped it off", says the scrapyard guy, "He said he was getting rid of it because the grill was bent."

    "How much?" says I.

"Um.... five bucks?", says the scrapyard guy.

It started right up with the fuel it's previous owner left in the tank.

    Cheers,
    Gary

    Good deal,BD!
I bent the grill on my first 425, many years ago, melting lead. I just flipped it (the grill) over, and stomped it flat again ! Colemans are built tough... :D

i love my 413! big enough for 2 big pans, yet still small enough to be more portable than the 426 3 burner!

    Hello,
I also will weigh in with the 413G. They are a dependable large stove. And like stated they go well with the Coleman oven.

Thanks guys. 413 it is, with the oven of course. Got to have my cornbread in de woods!

Looked at one of the new dual fuel two burners at the W-Mart the other night. Seemed kinda flimsy, like the cabinet metal was a lighter gauge steel than what I remember. But at least they didn't skimp on the price! $98, and that's after the camping and hunting seasons! Usually everything goes on clearance this time of year.

Makes you wonder how Coleman can sell any new ones when the old ones always sell so cheap in garage sales and metal scrapyards and such. 5 bucks, you did good Gary.

Thanks again guys, you've been a great help as always.

    Regards,
    Ridge

Nice score on the 413g Gary! I've told it before, but my 413g came from the trash thrown out around the corner! AND I AM STILL KICKING myself for LEAVING A BLACK Coleman oven there, because it looked "cheap" and "flimsy" to me... AAAARRRGH!! There was nothing wrong with it except MY mind....

    Ridge,

Tough question, but in my humble opinion having used and bought many coleman 2 burners , I would suggest if you use a 425 go with the 425D - I think the best 425 Coleman made - it's a transition model between the older 425B,C - the B, C models have non attached grates and are smaller than the 425D. The 425D has a hinged grate and lid, with the fold down feet, very stabel vs. the 425B that has fold down legs but is wobbly - again the 425D is the 425 to use BUT if you want a larger stove go with the 413E - super solid stove, very dependable, but the 413G is a little more convient with the hinged lid and the wind guard flaps hold in place beter than the 413E, but I really like my 413 E's . I got one off of Ebay for .99 plus 12.00 shipping ! I pumped it right up and it worked perfect - very nice stove - One last thing if you need more power on any of these ring burner stoves, just add another burner ring to eack burner assembly, that will add about 20% more power to each burner, I have used as many as two extra burner rings , but found out just a little too much, but one extra burner ring is perfect, adds that extra BAM you need to these coleman stoves

Randy, Ebay has a nice looking 413E up for auction :
    http://cgi.ebay.com/VINTAGE-BOXED-C...329108052&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66:2|65%3A1|39%3A1|240%3A1318

Too expensive at 24.99 plus shipping I think but maybe wait 'till after auction and see if seller relists if does not sell at that price - more than likely not, but if you need one soon this is not too bad a price for a very nice looking 413E- the part in ad about solder on generator is normal for this type generator( they soldered on nut to help turn generator to remove it)Dent in front can be straightned out, no problem Check it out , maybe just what your looking for

Actually since I are a stovie, I just took along my Coleman 500 Pocket Rocket(sounds like it) and my trusty 8R. Even had my sterno stove for warm water anytime duty. Never short of stoves on a campout.

The Optimus 22 is a nicve looking stove. Don't think I have seen one locally. Guess I just need to look on eBay. Two separate burners and generators does make more sense than the Coleman two burner one generator setup.

Still want a Coleman 3 burner but I bet that is even worse about #1 being full blast so #2 and 3 can work.

Hi all: Here goes my two cents worth. Having used and owned quite a variety of these since the late 1950's, I believe all Coleman suitcase stoves are reliable and will do the job. (two burner is a little small for folding oven) My two burner preference is pre WW11 and preferably models #1-10,1923-1930. (#1's are hard to find) The cases are made out of heaver metal and I like the primer tray pre-heater system. (works in all conditions) also these early stoves put out a hotter flame one can use for other purposes as lead melting etc. For a 3 burner I would suggest mod 418( mid 30's or mod.420, 426 mid to late 40's).Three burners use the center as the primary burner, all the aforementioned stoves are not hard to find in the U.S. and I see them at swap meets / yard sales in the twenty dollar range. ( e-bay is usually a lot higher) These stoves usually need cleaning and they fire right up. Mike... P.S. I use the white gas versions only.

I picked one up a couple of years ago at a Walmart in Joplin, Mo. for about $35.00 on clearance, they had a whold stack on the end of one aisle in the sporting goods section. Can't say how the metal compares to any of my older stoves as it's still in the box.

I have a 425, 413g and a bigger 3 burner ###D (not quite sure) I like the 413g the best. the 425 is a little small for my taste. The 413g is perfect for the folding oven. The three burner is HUGE to lug around.

    Hey Tom,
I have the 413G, I left a Coleman OVEN behind on the trash pile. That's what I keep kicking myself over. I left a perfectly good black Coleman oven on the trash because I wasn't familiar with them and thought it was a flimsy bit of kit. ](*,)

A Coleman oven is a flimsy bit of kit, but it's a pretty good bit of flimsy kit. :D
