Went to my local outdoor pursuits shop today for coleman fuel. £6.00 for 1/2 a litre. Is there a product thats cheaper and as good or am i buying from the wrong place. Unleaded petrol is ok, but not ideal. Nigel :frown:
Use Aspen 4T alkylate petrol, it currently costs me £15.95 for a 5 litre plastic bottle. My local supplier also sells it in 1 litre bottles for £3.75 Optimus recommend using “environmental” petrols and this is Aspen 4T is what they mean. Many of us in the UK use Panel Wipe instead of Coleman Fuel. This can be obtained from Motor Factors. It is the stuff they use to wash and clean car body parts before painting. Depending where you buy it, costs vary between £9 to £15 for a 5 litre tin.

That's relatively cheap for Coleman fuel in the UK - most expensive I've seen it was at an outdoor shop in Hawes at £7.30 for 500ml (and that was at least 2 years ago...) If you can't find a source of panel wipe (you'll need the full-fat, industrial strength, extremely high in volatile organic carbon compounds version of course, and not the water-based stuff) try malt whisky. It's cheaper than Coleman and if it doesn't burn in your stove or lantern, you can always drink it instead..!
hi Nigel i have been using tetrosyl pre wipe degreaser (panel wipe) the part no is pwd005,i get it from the local auto factors,last time it was a bit over £15 for 5 litres,but i'm not sure how much it will be now,i'm still trying to track down a local supplier of aspen so that i can compare it against panelwipe Bill

I can also recommend the Aspen 4T, but as Parra mentions it can be hard to find a local stockist. The 4T has worked great in all petrol stoves I've tried it in, with no difference I could detect between it and Colman fuel (other than the price). However, make sure you don't get the Aspen 2T by mistake - this is more commonly available than the 4T (at least round my area) but is a 2 stroke pre-mix - would make a right stinking mess of any stove you tried it in!
Ive made a 116 mile round trip to get some aspen 4t. It cost £11.50 plus vat for 5 ltrs. Ive only tried it in my coleman 533 stove so far and all seems well. I will try it next in a coleman lantern. Thanks again for the help gents. See you all at newark.
Hi, This is a very unreasonable price, fully agree. My outdoor shop (Vienna Austria) charges approx. 4.50 Euro (with the current 1:1 conversion also 4.50 GBP) for a liter. Still not cheap but OK. A bit cheaper and also available in such shops may be Primus powerfuel in 2.5 L container. Kind regards Mike

Hi Yes that's it, but if you spend some time looking you'll find it for a lot less. Look in yellow pages(yell.com) for motor factors.

I wasnt implying that you would burn any slop in your pride and joy Excellant, i may order a can and give it a go, as i camp a lot and tend to use a lot of colemans, as it is often easier to fire that up rather than the old primus's... Cheers
