Primus 5 Questions

Picked up this Primus 5 From a boot sale a couple of weeks ago.

I've a couple of problems

Is it a 1932?

or a 1923


Next one is, What can I do with this?

1923, for sure.
The letter(s) is as far as I know always situated above the number(s) when there are any of those.
You can also see by the shape of the eight, and it's slightly different sized loops, that it says '18' rather than '81'.

 

I agree with Christer, it's an M, rather than a W.
The 1923 date would also tie in with the early form of silent burner. It is very difficult, if not impossible to track down spare parts for such a burner now. However, a standard two-pint burner could easily be substituted, and you will have a very usable classic stove.

Thanks both, I thought as much about the burner cap, I will probably change the burner, but I might do a bit of tinkering and try and come up with a cap.

What do the numbers on the bottom mean?

I have several number 5's

one with p20 one with a0 and one with z21 also have a burmos which apears to be the same but has no number on it.

I have a burnner cap for one of them, can post some pictures of the cap if it is of any use to help you try and make one.

I was also interested in the burner cap, having scored a #4 dated 1914 for $5. It also is missing the top peice, and I was wondering what those looked like.

Hi Ramenholic, Check out this link for photos of a Primus No.4 stove. The burner and caps are smaller than on a No.5 stove.

Your No.4 is early, and probably had a different style of silent burner fitted initially. If you look down the thread you will see a post by Brass Monkey showing the earlier form of silent burner used on a No.4 stove.
