Spirit bottles for stove priming?

Hi, Folks...
I have a newbie question..
Where the heck do people get the little spirit bottles with the long thin curved tubes on top for priming stoves and lanterns? I've seen some with brass tubes and some with plastic (I think), but I don't have a clue where they come from. Base camp lists one in the Vapalux Lantern spares, but its something like 14 Pounds Sterling.
I have bought one and it lives in my Hiker+, but I can't afford them at that rate.
I've been using plastic eye droppers, but on a stove like an 8R, that can get messy, with burning meths in the bottom of the case.
Hope somebody can shed some light for me.

Best one I've found is from McMaster Carr. Item
#1036K13 for the 16oz. & 1036K12 for the 8oz size.

 

Just search for it in Ebay under sewing machine oiler. Works the same for me and its got a cover on the spout end.

You could also look in radio controled model section, as they use them for putting fuel in.

 

The one I use most is Coleman part no. 201-5511.

I mainly use empty hair dye bottles, you may find something similar locally.
Not my hair dye by the way, got no hair to dye

 

Meths dispensing .... It's an open & shut case :-)

Hello Al,

All the above suggestions work on stoves etc.
But the 'Swan-neck' design on several swedish bottles are a necessity for most lamps with a priming cup.
You could fabricate one from any tin with a cap and brass tubing (from a model store etc.) should that be your need.



The pictured bottles I have bought from some obscure internet sites, with luck and patience.
These so-called "safety-bottles" have that tube run towards the bottom, so that when up-turned, only the volume of the tube is being dispensed.
The Primus No.1745 bottle has its neck straightened and works wonders on stationary (double) stoves.

Hey Mike,

Doesn't spirit inside those cups evaporate a while later. I see no cap at the end of pipes. How are they carried during transportation while full?

I am highly non familiar with those spirit cups as I have got none.

 

Hi Sefa, some of the meths bottles have spout caps on them so it does not evaporate that drastically or spill out. Its good enough for 2-3 day trips depending on 4oz or 8oz containers. I use this one and being sold on ebay:

I made a couple myself ....

Small PVA Glue Bottle.
Short length Of 3/16" Copper Tube.
A Cut Down Tyre Valve ( Internals Removed )& Cap.
Araldite Glue.

Nick, I really like that meths bottle. I suppose they're sold like that in the UK? We have similar bottles with the flip up squirter type top, but ours don't come with that nice tube.

Hmm, now maybe I could just find a bit of tube somewhere and insert.

 

I found mine in U.S .... smile link .
They suck 8) which for fuel reclamation is good
The tube is a thermo plastic & you can heat set to your required contours .
The thread fits many common PET bottles & goes very nicely with my £1.25 /500ml ,shop 500m away, drinking flask shaped meths bottles ..
Ive pressure tested & vacuum tested my ad hoc. assembly & over 2 years of regular use .. Its stood up
I reckon the PET meths bottles are the lightest way (outside a ziplok bag ) to carry fuel .. Alco/Petrol/Kero/Brandy ...Etc
OR Even stored inside of a ziplok bag

Fumes of something have got to me ... Time to get out ....

I use old nasal spray bottles. Just remove the dip tube and it squirts a tiny perfect stream that reaches into the deep recesses of all my stoves. Actually bought some cheap stuff and dumped it out to use it for this purpose. I've been using these for a few years now with no issues. Of course you can't pack 'em away in a hot stove case, but I always allow them to cool anyway. Admittedly, not as classy as those purpose made cans, but works better than anything else I've used.
