Hello again all. Look at my new Tilley addition. This one will fit very nicely beside my R1. Of course I still need to get it fixed. This one appears to be in very nice shape, much more so than any others that I have seen in the memorable past. So to all my fellow Tilley freaks out there, eat your hearts out. Nice one, Evil - we need another emoticon now - like the man with the pink face, but going green (with envy), this time I got a Tilley R1 in similar condition the other day - unassembled in the box and complete with everything including the asbestos mantle in it's own little box. I'll assemble it for the Gathering this weekend - but I'll be b*gg***d before I light it. (I know we're 'camping', lads, but that's positively NOT an invitation, BTW!... ) My feelings are:- I know it will light and I've seen these burning already - so why lose it's essential character - its uniqueness. Yours and mine are probably museum pieces. If they're lit, then they become just like any other used heater/radiator. So that's my two penn'orth...
Ian and Dave, I am not going to light it! I am going to assemble it and then just look at it in all of its glory. I know what to expect of it. They are fine pieces of history, I use my R1 every winter season and to me it is the dogs b*lls. When I melted down the vap tube I decided to clean it and was amazed at how well it has held up. I got it a while back and it too was in very nice condition having been used only a time or two. I have all the original pieces and the paint and font are near perfect too. For every stove or lamp that I collect to use I try to get one that is in mint condition and in this I have achieved. I hope to see pictures of the gathering since I am unable to attend. Once I get the R55 and assemble it I will see if I can get some pics uploaded. I just wanted to share my acquisition with all of you on the other side of the pond, 1) to sort of gloat, and 2) to show they we too are fans of these wonderful lamps, stoves, and heaters. Evil
Jeez, how did you manage to do that? - was the ceramic insulator tube missing from inside the mantle?
No the ceramic insulator was on the stove in its correct location. Problem being, it had crack or a fracture. I didn't notice it as it was under the asbestos mantle. I was using it one day and the whole diffuser head looked off kilter and then I did an investigation and found the meltdown. Apparently it had gotten so hot that the tube itself bulged enough to split the brass tube that goes on over it and under the ceramic. I still consider myself lucky I didn't burn down the house. I am going to get a spare from Tilley Jim. I already procured the SP4 service pack and am hunting another piece of asbestos. Rob
