Hikin Jim asked me to review the Kovea Butane Adapter when I have the time. I received this a week ago and the adaptor (or adapter) is made up of plastic and aluminum parts. This is the lindal male valve on top of the adaptor The bottom which attaches to the butane canister looks like this In the unlocked position where you insert the adaptor to the canister looks like this In the locked position where the plastic tab grabs on to the inner collar or indentation of the canister looks like this Before you insert the adapter into the butane canister, make sure your pocket stove which screws on to the male lindal thread is attached otherwise, butane will come spewing out of the hole. The only pocket stoves the adaptor will attach directly to the adapter are ones with a very narrow lindal connector. I was surprised that my Primus mini stove which had a wide lip will not attach to it. Take note of picture No. 1. So for this test, I used my Lytham Tiddler stove and Globetrotter pot. Here is a flame shot of the Tiddler in action At an acceptable 8 minutes, the water got into a rolling boil with the burner adjusted to medium setting. There you have it the Kovea Butane Adapter. Just one note of caution, as with any liquefied gas such as butane, propane, or isobutane they have a tendency to flare up if the canisters move. Ron
I also bought one of the Kovea adapters which is why I was interested in Ron's impressions. I too was struck with the shortness of the male threads. I don't see why they made the male threads so short. The shortness of the male threads does limit the number of stoves that can be used with this adapter. In general of course, this adapter should be used with remote canister type gas stoves. Use with an upright canister stove could be dangerous. Overall, I think this is a much better product than the adapter sold by Plus2City on eBay. The connection to the "long" (bayonet connector type) butane canister is much more secure. Also, the Plus2City adapters frequently leak. Not good. HJ
I would think that Kovea intended these adapters for their own products to be used with butane. In order for their stoves to be fully marketable worldwide, they did in fact use the standard lindal valve. Hence, not all stove connectors will seat properly due to the narrow gap between the thread and the outer plastic circumference. Having said that though it gives us options to use it in "some" stoves which to me is acceptable owing to the fact that the price for one is cheap compared to the array of connectors being marketed in a Japan website and some enterprising businesses. I believe most members would agree on this. Itchy, the top cover of the stove is missing. Its still very rare to find one of these stoves however, the design is simple and can easily be duplicated since its all held down by screws. Ron
What's interesting to me is how the Kovea adapter connects to the "long" butane canister: the connection has a finger plate much like a Coleman Powermax connector. HJ
Ron, Jim, Would you recommend this adapter to your friends? How was the shipping cost and the wait time from Korea? Do they sell an adapter for a threaded isobutane can for fueling a Bluet stove?
I just got the adapter, so I haven't used it much, but it seems like a good product. As Ron mentioned, some stoves will not fit because the threaded section is short. The total cost including shipping was $12.00, which seemed reasonable. The product came fairly quickly, certainly more quickly than products I've ordered from Hong Kong. I didn't see them offering any adapters that would go with a Bluet stove. HJ
John, I would recommend this to friends. It is much better quality than the one being sold by HongKong sellers. If you intend to refill the threaded isobutane canisters, you will have to rig up a hose with one end having a lindal connector (for the butane canister) and the other end should have a connector AND fuel control. That is what my next project is all about. Again, its just an experiment for me and likely to be a success. However, it will NOT be a regular thing. Depending on where I buy my canisters, it would be safer to just buy a new one. Ron

I just got one too, fits my kovea (camp 4) moonwalker and kovea camp 1 stoves. The adaptor came with the camp 1. The threads are too short for the brunton vesta.
It's quite odd. The threads are very short. There are some stoves on which the adapter will not work. I wonder why they did that. I found out something else recently: A Brunton Can stand, which is basically some feet for a canister of gas, has two sets of slots. The outer slots fit a standard 227g/8oz sized threaded gas canister. But what on earth is the inner set of slots for? It's far too small for even the little Jetboil 100g canisters. Almost on a whim I tried one of the "long" butane canisters, the kind used in the restaurant industry that have a "bayonet" connector. It was a perfect fit. Having one of those bayonet connector canisters upright with a stove attached to a Kovea adapter on top doesn't sound very steady, but it might work if you had a fairly large burner head. Just a curiosity mainly I think. Not terribly practical as far as I can see. HJ

Thanks Jeff, that second adaptor looks interesting, I cant see how it attaches but is sure looks pretty. I have been looking at the kovea adaptor and I reckon it may have the short thread so it will fit more stoves... maybe... It has its own rubber seal (inside the top of the adaptor) so may not need to connect with the fuel line connectors o-ring.
I just bought the one in the second link. I was too damn curious. Time will tell. I think the Kovea adaptor has such short threads due to the black plastic. Jeff
The Kovea adapter affixes to the bayonet canister much the same as a Powermax fitting affixes to a Powermax canister: there's an inner cam that rotates. As the cam rotates, it forces "fingers" on a finger plate outward. The fingers have a lip on them. The lip fits into the corresponding depression on the inside of the outer rim of the canister's connector. It's actually quite a bit more secure than the ones that merely fit into a grove on the collar of the connector. There are some photos on my blog that illustrate how this works. Well, they're intended to illustrate. How well they do is a matter of opinion. HJ
