Hi Doug, What a beautiful Primus no.96L outfit, and in such lovely condition! I find the year code stamp very interesting. It looks as if there might have been a double stamp; B over-stamped with C. What do you think? Here is a post on a Primus E/F example from Motoshi: Primus No:100 - 1915?16? To me it just adds to the interest of the stove. Best Regards, Kerophile.
Hey, DougL, WOW!! That IS a lovely and brilliant little Primus!!! Great score for sure, and in such fine condition! Kerophile's comment about the date stamp are very interesting, as it does look like the original stamp was then over-stamped with the second letter. I have a Primus Pocket Outfit that is dated 1920, which is very, very close to yours, and love it, as I'm sure you do for yours!!! Hearty congrats, and many thanks for sharing that little gem with us!! Take care, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc
Hi Doug a beautifull example you have, the older example's are so nicely made and beautifully lettered and knurlling, for example the pump knob how it has been knurlled on just the two edges and a plain band in the middle. Another feature i like on the older versions is the seperate vent key.
Brilliant stove Doug! I just love the pictures on the tin as well. Nice to see rocky basking in the reflected glory of this stove as well. What are the chances of finding any more of this age in such fantastic condition. Green or what???????? All the best Nick
Super find and working like it should and not put away in a display case! i like the art work on the tin, people relaxing and enjoying the outdoors and not struggling against it on the icy mountain side which is used to sell stoves now--
Hello George, Yes it looks like a C stamped over the original B.The other links you posted seem to show that Primus may have had left over tanks from one year that may not have been finished and had to finish them the following year. That's my take anyway since all three examples had the next years letter stamped over the previous years.
Wow Doug, you must have been a good boy this year to be lucky to come upon that stove. The stove is 100 years old and is in great condition. But . . . . . the TIN. Boy, oh boy, what a cracking tin!
Wow! This is a beautiful example and well photographed, too. What a beautiful tin. Thank you, Ken in NC
I have the exact same one! It belonged to my grandfather who used it when he was a Boy Scout, which would have been early 1900s. Any idea how old it is? When it was made? Nice pics!
Welcome to CCS, @Ames Many Primus stoves are stamped with a manufacturing date code, often on the bottom. You can find a list of date codes here. If yours is stamped with a B over a C, well, B is 1912, and C is 1913. It's odd to have an overstamping like that. It's especially neat that you have an old one with a family connection. Congratulations! ....Arch
This over stamping is quite interesting to me, but I don't have any answers - only more questions. I am pretty sure it was originally a 'B with the 'dot' next to it', but I don't think it is over stamped with a 'C'. Looking at the over stamped image below there is a small vertical line indent at the top right. Clearly the 'B' doesn't have this little vertical line but neither does the 'C' stamp. At least none of the 'C's that I have researched The only Primus letter stamp I can find that has this little vertical dash is the 'G' However, I don't think it's a 'G' over stamp either, as there is no evidence of the bottom bit of the 'G'. What could it be? Any other ideas, I am intrigued.
