Impressed with the performance of my Thermette and having read and re-read umpteen times this helpful post ... 'New toy ... from 'dwarfnebula' about a back-packable (small, light) equivalent of much less - but useful - water capacity I wonder if 'dwarfnebula' has more to add, or if there's anyone else who has experience of using a Backcountry Boiler or the British mKettle ? I gather that manufacture and supply problems afflicted the Backcountry Boiler, but the mKettle seems to be readily available, certainly in the UK. With a hot, dry summer on the way (wishful thinking) I'm inclined to make the most of any dry 'found' tinder and fuel on walks and camp-outs and having the option of something portable (unlike the Thermette) but less than a fully-fledged campfire appeals. I appreciate it limits me to brews and foods to add boiling water to, but that's ok. John
G,,day I cant help with the ones you mentioned . but there is another one , Stormkettle . both large and small sizes. I do not own one , so cant give first hand info. cheers kerry
Thanks Kerry. You're a pal. I'll confess I've been 'economical with the truth' and jumped the gun by seeking opinions afterwards! I was convinced I was onto something good and took delivery of an mKettle today. At a little over 30GBP (nearer 50 if you go for the anodised version) it didn't break the bank. Impulse buy, granted. Beautiful quality but what leapt out at first glance were the the execution of the aluminium spinning and the reinforced stitching on the neoprene sleeve. Comparison shots with a 12-inch rule and a 1-litre capacity storm kettle. This mKettle is a little over 1/2-litre capacity Takes a Trangia too, although 'dwarfnebula' found the need to add a damper to the chimney to get a reasonable boiling time with a liquid fuel stove or burner. Mind you, use of a Trangia burner with this kettle defeats the object as far as I'm concerned, since I'd not be using the 'found' solid fuel I was wanting to use and a Trangia 27 would be a much better accompaniment for the Trangia burner - not surprisingly I'll take it out on my next Sunday morning jog and report back. I have one Backcountry Boiler. I hav enot used any of the others, so I have not to compare to. But I find it more enjoyable to use this than my Svea 123r when just cooking water.
