Hi, about a couple of weeks ago Trevor teased us with some images of a Virgin Monitor stove. She was lovely and totally un-touched by the hand of man. Last weekend I was given a wonderful early Birthday present by a good friend and fellow CCS member from England. This is a large Monitor stove, a sister to Trevor's Monitor.... But my one has an over-size burner, some experience, and is no Virgin! I thought I would share some images with you: This is a gallon capacity, paraffin-fuelled stove fitted with a roarer burner. Here she is operating this afternoon: This is a seriously big stove but it is difficult to get an idea of scale, so I have included a Primus No 3 ( 7-pint capacity stove) in this shot, for comparison Here is the Monitor alongside a Primus No 1 ( 2-pint capacity) stove. The stove is currently fitted with an over-size roarer burner but I also have the standard Monitor burner for this model of stove. This burner has a rated fuel consumption of 3 litres per hour and I estimate peak heat output at 30kW. She roars like a low-flying Military Jet when operating A really powerful stove, yet surprisingly controllable for such a big Girl! Best Regards, Kerophile.
Hi Keith. The working pressure range of this particular burner is 20 - 50 psi. By adjusting the tank pressure using the pump and air-release knob I have found it possible to get a fairly wide range of power settings. I believe it produces over 30kW on full power and probably about 7-8kW on "Low" power. Next time I am making a big batch of porridge I will see if the 7kW setting gives a nice simmer! It is all a matter of scale. Best Regards, Kerophile.
Oooohhh it is sooo beautiful! I have one of those No3 roarer burners, do you have any idea how much kW that one produces? Jan-Willem
Hi Jan Willem. I have made some estimates for stove powers, on the basis of published fuel consumption figures and a conservative estimate of 2kW for a Primus No. 2 stove. Here are my Estimates of maximum power for these stoves: Primus 96 = 0.93kW Primus 210 = 1.7kW Primus 1 and 5 = 2kW Primus 2 = 4.2kW Primus 3 = 9kW Primus 85 = 14.5kW Giant Monitor = > 20kW Please treat these as ball-park estimates since they rely on Manufacturer's figures for fuel consumption and I am often reminded that they lie. Best Regards, Kerophile.
With that stove, a wicker basket, a silk parachute and some strong rope a small child could go a long way !! Enjoy the Flame .. Yeah, abso-bloody-lutely ! \ \
Hi Kerophile What a fantastic Monitor burner! It looks like the tank is the same size as on my triple and single burner Monitor stoves - but your roarer-burner head is huge!!! The burners on my triple-burner are larger than any other 'normal' stoves that I have seen and the single burner dwarfs the triple burners. But your Monitor single burner head makes mine look rather small (this sort of thing seems to plague other aspects of my life). For those of you who missed earlier posts or need reminding, Below are some photos. My Monitor triple burner: My Monitor single burner alongside a Primus #2: Triple burner heads compared with single burner head:
Hi Trevor, The "Proper" burner for this Monitor stove is the one you posted pictures of. I think it is the same size burner as that used on a Primus 85 and is rated at about 14.5 kW. I have such a Monitor burner in virginal state but I need a nipple ( or at least a knowledge of the aperture size so that I can make one). I am currently running the Monitor stove on a modern Indian burner ( the giant in the photos). I believe this burner is rated at over 20kW and gets through 3 litres of paraffin an hour, compared to 2 litres per hour for the Primus 85 burner. I would be really grateful if you could tell me the jet aperture size in your big Monitor burner. My stove is MoD circa 1975 and marked up as "Paraffin Only" Best Regards, George.
Hi Kerophile, Isn't that a surplus NASA burner? Are you and Trevor having some kind of competition? Super stove! Cheers, Manny
Now Manny, you know that wouldn't work - all the spirit would float away during preheating and you'd set fire to Outer Space...
Hey, Lads, MAN, those are some whopping big stoves!! They almost make my Optimus #3 look like a midget in comparison!! 8) I would very much like to put a sound pressure meter on stoves like that, as well as others, and see how they all compare!! 8) Manny, you crack me up!! Great job, and fun idea!! I'll bet that an Optimus Booster Rocket would be VERY reliable, and the Astronauts would only have to change a leather gasket, now and then, instead of all the other stuff they have to do to make their rockets fly!! 8) Take care, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc Mark
Hi Manny. I love your Art Work! I never though to measure the thrust of the big Monitor. I reckon the Paraffin Weed Wand that was shown on the Forum some time ago might have an even higher heat output. Best Regards, Kerophile
