Hi here are some photos of my Primus No3 superscript 1. This is a massive 7-pint, brass tank, fixed leg stove fitted with a roarer burner. I estimate the full power of the burner at around 10kW. It is difficult to appreciate the size of this wonderful stove, so the first image shows it alongside a No.96 (0.5pint)stove. The last job that I used this stove for was melting 10Kg of lead, about 6 weeks ago. It didn't take very long! Best Regards, Kerophile.
Hi Kerophile, That is one heck of a superstove! But why the red flame instead of blue? Is it because of the size and power of the burner, throwing out more heat than a normal sized stove? Either way its awesome! Regards, Alan
George that is one terrifying beast and is obviously for a large caber tossing Scotsman to cook his half a pig and ostrich eggs for breakfast The last time I saw anything like that it was in use by Desperate Dan in the Dandy for simmering gravy for his cow pie. And of course If you're making fishing sinkers that size you're obviously intent on catching a large deep sea creature to batter with your chips on Friday.
Hi Alan and Bill, thanks for your comments. I have run several very large paraffin stoves/furnaces and there has always been a fair bit of yellow in the flame. This stove was little used when I acquired it about 4 yearsa ago, and the nipple looks good. I had the burner off this one yesterday morning to renew the heat-proof burner washer and check the filter/restrictor mesh plug. It had been only running for 5mins or so when I took the photos, so might still have been getting up to full operating temperature. As you can understand I generally run it outdoors, especially when lead-melting,and you don't see a lot of the flame. On the subject of lead weights for fishing; we have very strong tides here in the Pentland Firth and I usually have lead weights of several pounds on my line. Best Regards, Kerophile

Hi Kerophile, What is the "filter/restrictor mesh plug" that you speak of and what is it purpose? I have just been given a Primus #3 with a rather ornate cast iron trivet. It has no obvious damage, but the lacquering is well past its best and everything needs a good clean. I haven't been able to try a pressure test as yet as the pump's leather washer is perished beyond repair and I am awaiting delivery of a new one. A quick try of my NRV removal tool reveals that the tool is too short to reach, but I'm not planning on touching it unless I discover it has issues. My plan is to renew leather washer. Make a windshield (probably from a baked bean tin, minus top and bottom and with the addition of some extra holes. Clean or replace the jet (new one on order). Thoroughly rinse out tank (evidence of gunk inside at the moment). Tank filler cap has 'primus' marked washer in it that appears serviceable. Wasn't planning on removing burner unit until I read about the mesh thing. If tank holds pressure, test light stove. Trivet - covered in rust, but solid. Wire brush and possibly give it a coat of heat proof bbq black paint, unless you have any suggestions? It is identical to the one shown with 'shed man' stove, minus the gold paint. Some of these are rolled up remarkably dense. Here is an old brass gauze vaporiser from an old Sievert 1093 burner. It was not possible in any way to alter the shape of it by using two-finger force

Interesting to note how the design of the cast trivet on these very late examples had been altered. The inner ends of the leg top slots now being closed. I wonder if this was to reduce the propensity of these massive burners to deform and splay out the original open slot ends through over heating?
Hi all! I suspect this late primis was actually made by optimus. Its the same workmanship as the optimus lanterns ive got.... Another fun thing is that No.3¹is not the same size as regular no 3. Its a bit smaller and shallower, enough for me to consider it as a sub model.
