In THIS thread I was made aware (thanks @TRA_A) of this type of re-sealable pierceable gas cartridge, which sounds like a - what’s the word? - oxymoron. To clarify, the manufacturer states on the cartridge that the cartridge should be kept in the appliance until it’s empty and the ‘re-sealable’ property is activated in the event of the cartridge being removed accidentally. Here’s the gas cartridge. The instructions for use. The dimple in the top that’s pierced by the spike mounted in the valve when the valve’s screwed down. Those three spot-weld like marks seem likely to be fixings for the ‘gas lock’ device. I propose to test the device in a stove, removing the cartridge at some point as though by accident - outdoors, no naked flames or heat anywhere near and kitted-out (me) with gloves and goggles. Will the cartridge effectively seal the pierced hole? If it does I’ll then check whether the cartridge can be successfuly re-installed in the stove and be usable again. Finally, gas exhausted (several brews later) I’ll cut the cartridge open to examine the Gas Lock device and see how it works. Installed in THIS Italian stove. John
I did cut open a similar cartridge recently - Rothenberger C200 iirc. There was quite a substantial NRV-style spot-welded to the inside, way bigger than on a Lindal-type cartridge. At least 15 mm diameter/length metal cup with a piston (nylon?) and a pretty strong metal spring. That piston is pushed open by the piercing spike of the stove/lamp. Presumably some sealing device on the circumference of the piston - rubber o-ring maybe?
I suppose the reason the makers put in the warning about not using it in the way you would an unscrewable self-sealing cartridge is in case of a slight leakage past the valve if the canister came adrift or was deliberately taken off. Maybe it wouldn't matter if there was a slight leak of gas, as long as it wasn't instant total eruption. ??
@Gunner I’m sure you’re right. It’s evidently intended to work as a fail-safe should the cartridge be removed from the stove or lantern unintentionally. I’ll know when I try/video that function whether more gas escapes, as I suspect, than when a lindal valve equipped cartridge is disconnected. There is too whether once activated the cartridge is still usable, and taking a look at the device, whether it could contend with more than one accidental disconnection.
Gas cartridge still containing fuel, stove valve removed, no noticeable escape of gas. Cartridge dunked in water, no escape of bubbles, indicates the valve has sealed. Cartridge installed now in a Campingaz blowtorch
I was wrong, I couldn’t detect any escape of gas when disconnecting the cartridge. Indeed, some lindal valve cartridge disconnections have resulted in a ‘hiss’ and smell of gas.
I did find the cartridge I mentioned earlier. It is indeed a 'Rothenberger C200', they seem to call it 'ILL - integrated leak limiter' or (newer?) 'TSS top safe system'. The valve is attached with 3 spot welds, at very similar positions as on the CG picture. The o-ring seals pretty firmly around the pierced hole. The valve detached, but not yet disassembled: And its pieces. The spike pushes on the stud in the middle of the plunger. Even if it slipped it would not hit the o-ring and the valve would shut close, as long as the metal around the pierced hole is not severely deformed.
