    Hi all,

I’m new here. I just purchased an Optimus 111B “not tested”. It’s on its way here.

I’ve rebuilt Bialladin, Vapalux lanterns, and converted a Coleman lantern to kerosene. All started when my son, my buddy and I experienced freezing temperatures camping with a diesel heater last year. We learned our propane stoves and LED lights were useless.

I’m excited to get this my first antique Optimus liquid fuel stove. I’m wondering what parts and tools I should get and what I should check after I receive it. I will check a NRV and a SRV. I would like to get a check valve tool. Is there any particular size I should get?

I’m thinking of putting some carbon felt in a preheating cup as well.

If you think of any tips and hacks, please let me know.

I really enjoy learning from this forum. So much info here. I learned about Optimus 111 here.

    Thanks in advance!

    Not an antique, just vintage.
Every 111B I have had needed the NRV serviced as the pip would not seal. No particular size tool needed. The tool may be the hardest to locate, don't get one off the bay from the Julian's guy as his are not a very good quality. You can make a tool, there are a few threads here on what to make one from.

    +1 on @hikerduane comments.
I use Carbon felt in most all of my stoves - can only recommend it.
Regarding the SRV - start by testing with a toothpick or similar, the the spring is “springy” and that it seals again after have being poked a few times. If not —> that should be serviced too.
Several stovies in here place a flat piece from a an empty beer can (soda cans will never work ;-)) under the burner to protect the paint.

Good choice on the B, I find mine primes much more quickly then the Kero versions. Also make sure your tank cap has a good rubber gasket.
That's crucial on the white gas version for safety. One convenient aspect of this stove is that if you forget to bring some priming meth you can just use the gas that's in the tank in a pinch.
