SotM (Stove of the Month) August 2019

This month the category is military stoves. If the stove in question is also available on the civilian market there must be some markings etc that show that it is military issue.

The rules.

• Stove must feature in the Stove Reference Gallery (SRG) with a link posted in the entry. So now's the time to get those stoves photographed & posted! If it's been listed for years already that is ok too.
• Maximum of 2 pictures in the entry. The pictures must show the stove working & in it's entirety. More pictures can of course be shown in the linked SRG entry - as many as you want!
• Stove must be presently owned by the member.
• One entry per member.

This nominations post will be open for the month of August. At the end of the month the post will be closed & the qualifying stoves placed in a blind poll for members to vote for. The poll will remain open for 1 week. Most votes is the winner.

The winner will get a SofM Winner notation on their posts & profile & a £10 voucher code from The Fettlebox

If this takes off & is repeated sufficient times throughout the year all winners will be entered into a Stove of the Year poll in January 2020. The winner will get a SotY notation on their posts.

M40 / M44

First firing of my stainless M40, heating water for an afternoon coffee.

Aye, sometimes things work out just right.

Apologies on the poor quality of the second photo, folks. I'd turned off the shop lights to get the flame better but the low light capability of my camera is severely reduced, compounded by not having curtains on the windows. I need to build a proper photo booth and get a better camera.

 

A real beast of a stove, Soutter British military special made in 1918 when the supplies of Primus stoves from Sweden had been cut off due to sea mining and U-boat activity:

Here are a couple of photos of a well-used British Military No.12 cooker dating from 1996:






This Military No.12 cooker has case dimensions about 10 in x 10in x 5in. ( 250mm x 250mm x 125mm ) and weighs in at over 5kg, or around 11.5 lbs.
It is robustly constructed of stainless steel and some brass.

Coleman 520 1944 squad stove in reasonable condition and nice to use I really must get round to gating the paint off the canister!

British Military No.6 self-pressurising white gasoline (naptha) stove.

The late Steve Williams (CCS ‘Shed-man’) wrote HERE of his experience with the No.6 stove on a military Arctic Expedition to Ellesmere Island in the far Northern Territories of Canada in 1980.

In less extreme climes the stove has proved reliable and efficient.

Optimus 111D / 111C Arctic


Picked this up at an outlet for surplus gear from the Norwegian Army. This is the first time the burner has been fired up for many years, so the flame is slightly colored. Burns very clean, and not too rich, as the flame color might indicate. No smell at all. This is probably a Franken-stove, like most of the 111's from the army. Parts were swapped out quite frequently, so the case/tank might just as well come from an ordinary 111 or 111T (or both!). I would still call this a 111D, as the burner is the most defining feature for these stoves.

I left out the wind shield so you could see the burner. Notice the tall base of the preheating cup and the curly pipe around the burner. Fuel outlet from the tank sits quite high compared to 111 and 111T.

Yes the Army swapped things around. One of mine Cobra Arctics has this ugly green repaint done by the Army. I have seen several other 111 cases that is this colour. Both silent and roarers.

I do not want to see such a stove be given a "DQ" disqualification. Unless we bend the simple rules(?) posted above, as it stands "I think" a remedy may be...
... step 1. is for you to make a post of this stove / your stove in the gallery.

Now there's two who actually need to post their stoves in the Gallery to be valid for the contest...
Neither CaesarV nor HåkonJ has their stoves posted in the Reference Gallery (yet), but you both have several days to remedy that, which we absolutely hope you do since both are some really nice - and most welcome - stoves.

Oh, I believe I have misinterpreted the rules. I thought the rule meant a similar stove had to exist in the gallery, and not necessarily the particular stove entered in the contest. I will of course add my stove to the gallery if that is needed. If that is not an acceptable solution, I am happy to withdraw my entry to the contest. Just wanted to share this rather unusual stove

 

I can see HaakionJ's. I checked it earlier for case markings.

@CaesarV - the stove needs to listed in the Stove Reference Gallery & a link posted here please.

I can definitely see how rule can be misinterpreted.
Questions: will we just bend rules? did you misinterpret? or did I?
