Fettling materials & tools - what to use & where to find them

I've used the Rustoleum rust converter primer. Worked great.

 

is there anything wrong with using throttle body carbon remover such as "GRC throttle body and valve carbon cleaner", to remove carbon buildup in the vapor tubes?

I use carburettor cleaner for cleaning vapourisers. You sometimes get interesting colours on first light up, but it’s fine. Pipe cleaners are useful, as well.

Mr Muscle foaming oven cleaner is our local mechanics weapon of choice for cleaning gummed up and coked up components. May be worth a try.

 

Make sure the cleaner isn't chlorinated. You'll get more than funny colors when you first fire it up.....

 

What Marc says. I had several cases in the mid-1980s involving folks that put torches to chlorinated-hydrocarbon paint strippers to 'speed the process up'. The result is the production of phosgene, a poison gas used on the battlefields of WWI.

 

I don't heat any fluorocarbon based cleaners. I enjoy being able to breath easy. i would highly suggest using an air hose with nozzle to dry off any cleaner before reassembling the stove prior to firing. the old 111 chloro based fire extinguishers killed a lot of people before they were abandoned.

How did the tool work out?

 

Not too good. I had to get one from quiet stove that looked like a 5 pointed Trox bit , but I was able to get the screw removed and fix the srv.

I'm waiting for the metal washer for the stem seal to arrive from Basecamp sports to fix the stem seal issues, (the stove leaked around the control valve stem), this had when I bought it. The metal ring behind the graphite packing was missing

The Quietstove tool is known to round the 5 sided hole.

I'm still looking for a correct tool for the SRV seeing as I have other stoves but the fettle box doesn't carry the Penta tool anymore and eBay wants 32.00 plus shipping for a t-handle version.

Sheepsfoot is a good name for these soldering assist doohickeys. They’re the bee’s knees for removing and seating seals, thanks to the dual curved points, tempered and sharp. Found at Radio Shack too long ago.

 

This hastily cut open doorknob with jaggedy-pointy bits and flat-scrapey bits has been handy for cleaning burner washer sealing flats and annular groove with the burner threads safely tucked out of harms way inside. The chunky knobular shape is as easy to manipulate as, well, a doorknob.

 

A “sheepsfoot” tool has a very specific use.

It is also a shape of a knifeblade. I am sure the word, by itself, has other meanings.
