Hi, A few days ago, I made a discovery at a local online flea market: Svea No.1. I paid for it 25 EUR. It seems to be perhaps even in working order. Only the pump leather has dried, greasing could help. Is there any idea how old this stove could be? Do I also need a flame spreader? Markings are as follows : On the top of the tank, "Original Svea No 1", likely the same in Arabic characters, and a little coat of arms around which says "The king of stoves". Next to the riser it says "Guaranteed made in Sweden". The filling cap says "Svea" on one side and "Sweden" on the other. The air-screw says "Svea 948" on one side, and "Sweden" on the other. The side of the tank says "The original Svea stove is guaranteed." in English, French, Italian, Greek and Arabic characters. On the burner, there is a "Made in Sweden / Svea CBEA". BR, Jukka
Doesn't need a flame spreader; it's integral to the roarer burner. It does need a flame ring, but will work without one in the meantime.
@Jukka Pekka Very nice thanks for posting it. You may have already reviewed the examples in the gallery? We would like to see your entire trivet and what-all text is on that one. Re your: "Is there any idea how old this stove could be?" Good question. Trivet aside an easy answer would be, otherwise, yours appears to match Iani's Svea No.1 - early 1930s the easy answer (early 30s) is often not the best answer. Iani posted that in 2013... looking at other examples , more details may have emerged since 2013 and his and yours could also be a little or quite a bit later (well into the 40s). They have different trivets a better look at yours may provide a clue that yours is later yet vs earlier?
Thanks for the answers! I think my Svea No.1 looks the same as Ian's - except on the cooking platform, there are different texts MADE IN SWEDEN, SVEA (two times) and 3 little crowns. Jukka
Thank you, I say that is another clue. For me I learned yours is among several quite similar yet slightly different pressed steel Svea trivets. As for how old it could be... above I guesstimate mid 30s at the oldest. Myself, unaware what an early 50s Svea 1 looks like, I could not rule out early 50s. That's what I find. I defer to others. A fellow stovie might be able to narrow the mid 30s - early 50s year range. thx ATB
BUMP @Jukka Pekka sorry if language becomes a challenge. You presented a nice "Svea No. 1" , i made the last comment re yours: A fellow stovie might be able to narrow the mid 30s - early 50s year range. ...no follow up yet. Might we do better, anybody? read-on. Like the roarer examples below your burner also has cross text Made in Sweden, SVEA | CBEA . ---------------------- Hi @Ben Hall you just purchased, and posted, an unfired "SVEA 5", at a bargain price btw . You are glad i didn't pull the trigger on that one and seeing it sold, delivered and in the gallery in less than 4 days I am especially glad that you got it. Congrats, when you have time you will be interested in dating details i presume. @kerophile @abbahco1 @Tony Press @igh371 Gentlemen, all, I ask a favor. Over the years differing comments arise re dating Svea 3 leggers (btw "for the moment" all examples i bring up have recessed fillers). Above is Jukka's "Svea No.1" nicely presented in stove forum with details for discussion. Ben has just posted his NOS "Svea 5" in gallery link . Tony posted his NOS "Svea 1" in gallery link . It would seem that the use of "...No. ..." stamped into tank ie "SVEA No. 1 " vs not ie "Svea 1", will be an obvious dating clue? Ben's "Svea 5" came with 1963 instructions. I reviewed it (when it was on ebay, prior to any CCS comments), i was guesstimating the version aligned with 1958 - 69 and due to instructions, his being closer to 1963 (63-69). ... and guess what, i did not base that on Svea 5 vs Svea No. 5 . A very obvious detail and which is why i post today... What can we learn re dating when we see: Svea No.1 vs Svea 1 Svea No.5 vs Svea 5 Do we know approximately when this change occurred? ... anyone? thank you all
However, this unfired one is clearly pre-Optimus (mid-1960s) and the script on the front marks it as earlier than the very latest genuine Sievert-Svea stoves. The Optimus era model are simply Optimus stoves with Svea stamps. This one is earlier. It would be good if someone could work out when Svea dropped the front-panel stamp, as the latest ones don't have it. Looks like the recessed filler was present quite a bit earlier. Peter
@OMC I’m not able to add anything more than Peter at this stage, but the features you are focussing on provide the right splitting points in the evolutionary tree. Mine is later than Ben and Jukka’s, but how late? Cheers Tony @abbahco1
Peter, all, re my "What can we learn re dating when we see: Svea No.1 vs Svea 1 ... , Svea No.5 vs Svea 5 " and your: " ...the script on the front marks it as earlier than the very latest genuine Sievert-Svea stoves. ... It would be good if someone could work out when Svea dropped the front-panel stamp, as the latest ones don't have it." Two different subtopics, i've not yet made significant progress on any solid answers myself. I can say these 2 changes did not happen in lock step. ------------------------------- RE "SVEA 1" with, and without, front panel stamp: Ben's "SVEA 5" has front panel stamp / 5 lines of multilingual text (front side of tank) Dick Walker's "SVEA 1" link has front panel stamp / 5 lines of multilingual text Tony's "SVEA 1" does not have front panel stamp Hydro451's "SVEA 1" link may be a match to Tony's ------------------------------- For search and cross reference the script on the front is 5 lines of multilingual text: The original "SVEA" stove is guaranteed Le réchaud original "SVEA" est garanti Il fornello orininale "SVEA" è garantito Πρωτότυπορ πετρελαιουηχανη "ΣΒΕΑ" ΗΓΓΥΗΜΕΝΗ ..........xxxxx[arabic script]xxxxxx............ Tony, re Do the numbers on the tags tell us anything? "us" collectors, i'm not aware of any explanations re #s on tags. May be a surprise Ben's # is higher than yours? I don't know what to make of that nor, in-general what to make of those #s. thx -------------------------- all, Peter, After plenty of reviewing last night and this morning found a whole lot of nothing, on-topic. There is one *tidbit for consideration... RE "SVEA 1" with, and without, front panel stamp: *Geoff's SVEA _5 [1958 instr.] link has front panel stamp / 5 lines of multilingual text Ben's "SVEA 5" [63 instr.] has front panel stamp / 5 lines of multilingual text (front side of tank) Dick Walker's "SVEA 1" link has front panel stamp / 5 lines of multilingual text Tony's "SVEA 1" does not have front panel stamp Hydro451's "SVEA 1" link may be a match to Tony's Side note: sure i can be observant but since day 1 as collector I've been known to be "off" re scale/size (hint: simply noting dims / capacity can be great help), miss the obvious and see what i want to see . [and today i want to see "SVEA 5" aligned with 1958 ?] *@Geoff Holloway or anybody, I may have something, please check me on this, Geoff's SVEA_5 link above, well, he has what appears to me to be "SVEA 5". It's very hard to make out (in his pic of under burn). The top of tank his tank is stamped "SVEA 5" or "SVEA No. 5" ?, confirm this and i think we'll have strong indicator "SVEA 5" (& SVEA 1) and front panel stamp were present: c. 1958 -to- some time after 1963. "SVEA 1", "SVEA 5" on Sievert tanks: maybe goes to the end of Sievert Sundbyberg production (1969/70)? and Front panel stamp: was dropped at some point? prior to end of "Sievert" production.
Greetings @OMC and all, That unfired Svea No. 5 was definitely a bargain price and is a very nice stove. I feel very lucky to have obtained it, as I thought there would be stiff competition for it given it's nice condition. I will note that it does have some tiny spots of discoloration / tarnish that I can't explain...and so far...I've not figured out how to get them off. Of course, I've only tried very gentle methods - soap and water, a little car polish, etc...nothing drastic. I need to do some more reading here on what's best. The dating discussion above is very interesting. Two data points: I've got a Svea No. 14 with external NRV, making it pre-WWII IIRC per discussion here, and it says "Svea No. 14." Same with my Svea No. 16 - external NRV, and says "Svea No. 16" on the tank. The writing is quite thick and rounded on both, while the writing on the No. 5 is much thinner and less rounded. Thanks much, Ben
I was at a "Flea Market" in Prescott Valley (Arizona) and naturally had to look for another stove to add to my meager collection. I heard the "You should have been here last week..." and on my way out I asked a dealer if he had any stoves and he said no, BUT out of the corner of my eye spotted a stove which I offered to buy. He was glad to rid himself of it and I'm embarrassed to report how little I paid for it! It is an SVEA 948. It is missing one leg and the pump, and of course I'd want to get it going. From what I'm reading, it is a Kerosene stove? Do these stoves use a control valve? Any hints that may be offered will be appreciated.
Hi @ArizonaCamper If you post some photos, that will help. From what little I can see, the "948" number is from a pressure release screw? If so- kerosene fuel, no control valve (control is via tank pressure). Parts should be available, but if you get the photos up someone who genuinely knows something will be able to give you better advice.
Greetings @ArizonaCamper - agree 100% with @Scrambler - a picture would help greatly and it's probably kerosene. Svea did make stoves that require other fuels: for instance, the Svea 123 is a gasoline / petrol stove (and one of my favorites). Thanks much, ben
Hi @ArizonaCamper It's a Svea 5, written directly opposite the filler. Would have looked like this when new: Svea No. 5 - late production? That should make parts easier to locate. Kerosene, silent burner. Good luck!
welcome @ArizonaCamper , thank you for posting this. IF you can discipline yourself to consider a stove "donor" or "for parts" you're a better man than I. I've lost track of how many stoves I was happy to purchase "all it needs is part XYZ". Soon to buy a "parts stove" but oh, this one is nice too, well, i best make them both complete, buy a 3rd and on it goes. The helpful hint myself and others settle with: whenever possible buy complete stoves (re function anyway). ------------ I have a favor to ask. Above are a couple of details we have not yet sorted. Yours does have the multilingual text stamped on the front. Please can you tell us, is the top of your tank stamped "Svea 5" or "Svea No. 5" ? thank you
