Newark Gathering 2 - 4 June 2023 - Official Announcement

Great time at Newark 2023. Sold on a lot of rare items I've collected over the years & accumulated a few more common items, sadly from the collections of collectors no longer with us. Money to good causes & happy to have some 'users' to remember old friends by. It's well used old stoves like this, full of character & untold stories that I love. Thanks to everyone for attending & the kind comments of support & appreciation for organising the event. It's no big chore! Big shout out to the Green Family @redspeedster for feeding me once again & being great company!

 

I’ll echo those sentiments Ross, and express my thanks for organising a wonderful event again.

Fine gathering of lovely people. Clearly Dave Tomkins (alias ‘Willie the Steam’) was clearly enjoying himself.




Though primarily a lampie, Dave confesses to owning 2-300 stoves. Many are rarities, such as this early Tilley.

Also on the theme of Big Si’s stove trove, he let me try out his Optimus Polaris. Kero vapourises, but the yellow flame tips suggest the ‘one jet suits all fuels’ claim can’t wholly satisfy the blue flame purist.




I took some carbide lamps. The tall one in maroon paint would have illuminated night-time street excavations, probably with a parabolic reflector added to direct a beam of light.




It put on a dazzling performance.




Morning after, cleaning out the spent carbide residue. Four lumps of carbide lived to light up the night on another, er, day.

Indeed yes. This Sigg Tourist, owned by Trevor (Shagratork) and formerly owned by - or possibly sourced by for Trevor - Gerry (Nordic Thug) is a treasured reminder for me of two old friends. RIP gentlemen.

love the green tent, it was lack of money that stop me turning up, saw one stove in pics I wont, but again it is to much, a stove like that will go will in me Tramper van,

For me, John's last pic of the "Fettlers Arms" is quite poignant, whether intended to be or not?

After the collective thoughts posted by attendees of members since passed, it almost seems that the tent shadows suggest they're still there amongst you.
The contrast between the solid structure of a couple of simple chairs and their occupants.

I know it's only shadows, but my mind wanders lol

Nice pictures and sentiment John, it was a bittersweet camp in many ways good to catch up with old friends and make some new ones but also a reminder of those who have passed.
I think I've got nearly every MSR stove that's made it over the pond, I haven't got any of the military stuff, and as I was packing to come home I found at least two more in the van I'd forgotten to put out.

Fantastic turnout for Newark '23. Many familiar faces and quite a few new ones too.
A big 'Thank you' to Ross and all who attended.

 

Newark 2024 booked. Due to a double booking we are a week later than normal. From 2025 we have a rolling booking in place so this won't happen again.

Hopefully I might get the Steamtent Co-operative to come along and have a meet.

 

I thought folks might like to see a few of my pictures from the meet. Sadly I completely forgot to take any pictures of the stoves I had out so if anyone did and can share with me I'd be grateful. If you're on FB you can see the rest of the pictures here

Got to say I really enjoyed myself and had a fantastic time and looking forward to next years meet.

I would like to take this opportunity to say what a wonderful time I had on Saturday at Newark which was very well attended. I spent all day looking at the lamp and stove displays and mor importantly chatting with old friends old and making new ones too.

From Norfolk to Newark and back again in the same day was a 240 mile round trip taking just about 5 hours in total aided and abetted by numerous sections of single carriageway and several lots of roadworks.

The whole experience was totally and utterly worthwhile and I only have two regrets: 1). I wished I had been able to spend a few nights camping and displaying. 2). I had taken some photographs. Hard to believe in 9 hours on site that I never managed to take one!

I would like to thank everyone for making me feel so welcome once again and would especially like to thank Ross for all his continuing hard work, providing us with these marvellous forums and for organising this fantastic event.

I have already submitted my holiday form for the 2024 meet and look forward to seeing everyone there.

My Newark 'Trevor' stove (Primus No.54) brought back to life with NOS burner cap, new legs and cleaned up filler cap. I'm minded to keep the rest, including the ref number, 'as is' in memory:

Hi Folks

Herewith my “Trevor” stove working well after a quick clean and oiling of the pump leather, no other work required! It appears to have had little use and runs well for an old lady of 96 years (R - 1927]

I shall think of Trevor each time I use it.
