Hi, folks, about to get my hands on a rather nice looking Hipolito stove to go with my Hipolito lantern. This has 1.75 litre capacity. Is it no1 or2? I dont know much about those but they look similar to Optimus and Svea stoves. Are the parts,/ repair kits easily available and do they share these with other stoves? Any suggestions welcome.:content:

Hi tacho D, welcome to CCS.
If the tank capacity is 1.75 pints you likely have one of these:

Read the thread. Not much more to add. Good stoves and the Fettle Box can supply compatible washers and seals if you need to do any work

    Best Regards,
    Kerophile.

    Welcome, Tacho.

These Hipo #1s are nice stoves. One of my earliest stove purchases after joining up here at CCS in 2001 was one of these, NIB from Basecamp, who back then had a goodly supply; long gone, of course....

Thanks guys, got in touch with the Fettle Box but rather than suggest one of their kits, they suggested I remove and measure each individual washer! I was surprised as I thought these share design/ seal dimensions with other common stoves. Any ideas?

I have a Hipolito no.2 that is different than the catalogue page that John has posted. I think you'll find the seals are standard sizes but the fill cap could have a vent screw or an air tube vent so it's best to wait until you have the stove in your possession before ordering the parts. And of course measuring things always is the most accurate way to get things right the first time.

A lot of parts are compatable but even within a brand there are different sized washers. For example not all Optimus filler cap seals are the same size.

If I don't have an example of your stove I don't guess. My kits B, C & D are subtly different for common stoves you may expect to take the same size washers. Pump leather, burner washers & filler cap seal are the ones that usually vary & easily measured.

There are sellers who will sell a generic kit for unspecified 'Primus' stoves with no dimensions given. From what I can deduce those are usually close to my Kit E for the standard 2 pint fixed leg No 1 & 5 type. I sell 5 kits to cover the common models plus several specific model kits.

I can mix & match or make custom with no minimum order. I just need dimensions to do that.

    Hi Tacho

I'm fairly new to all this too and have just finished my first stove project. I have come to realise that these guys are very experienced and knowledgeable and have some very good information to share in order to reach a successful conclusion to your first stove project. If they were to tell me that I need to do this or that, then that's exactly what I would need to do, even if I tried my own way first.

Through trial and error, I've also learnt that if you provide the correct information, then The Fettlebox comes up exactly with what you need, unlike some of the other parts suppliers.

I'm currently (frustratingly) awaiting delivery of several stoves that need work on them and I will be guided expertly by the members on this site and supplied by The Fettlebox in order to get them all going.

    Have faith

    Baz

That makes perfect sense, thank you. I will wait till the Hippo arrives and then take a closer look.

Just to make life even more complicated, I've just been given a Hipolito No1 BUT it has a control knob coming out of the burner assembly. It comes as the 'hot end' of a 'Victory' boat heater. The burner lights and goes well with a nice blue flame. HOWEVER the control knob does nothing AND its pointing in the wrong direction (ie the pump and the control handle won't fit through the holes in the casing) It looks as if someone has fitted the wrong washer somewhere and in tightening up the burner, its ended up at 90' to the pump instead of 30' to it. Any ideas where I should start?? Best wishes from a newbie.

Hi Mr Blott. Welcome to CCS.

There are usually one ot two heat resistant washers between the upstand from the tank and the burner. In the more common case, one below and the other above the spirit cup.

In the case of regulated burners, where you might want the control knob at a certain orientation, to match up with the casing say, it is useful to have Heat Resistant washers availble in both standard, and non-standard thicknesses. In this way you can usually arrange to have an acceptably tight burner occur at the orientation you require.

I believe that Base_Camp can supply such suitable HR washers.

CTK1105 Heatproof Packing for marine stoves, thicker than 2221, used on Shipmate and similar stoves to get spindle pointing forwards. Also useful on any large stove to seal difficult burners. £ 1.35.

If you are keen on do-it -yourself you can rub down a standard HR washer to a suitable thickness using emery paper. DO NOT DO THIS WITH ASBESTOS BASED WASHERS.

    Best Regards,
    Kerophile

Hi Mr Blot, and welcome to the community. I remember having such a heater in a classic yacht but had no idea it was a Hipo sitting in it.
I just finished restoring my first stove project, also a Hipo no1. Now highly polished and with new seal kit and burner cap NRV, Jet and removal tools, all supplied by Rick at Brass Lamps and Stoves. The NRV was on too tight and removal impossible so left well alone as it was working. This has a silent burner and also burns with a clean blue flame, but pre-heating outdoors is a problem so made a windshield out of a Branston Baked Beans tin. Made of aluminium, hopefully this shouldn't rust. Will post pictures. Good luck with yours.
