I lit the Monitor I've been fettling for the first time last night and, even though the flame was a bit more yellow than I'd have liked, it burned strong, LOUD and passed the tea-test with flying colours.

This is my first roarer in the larger size (Primus 5, etc) as all the others have been silents and what struck me was the huge gap between the burner top and the pot stands - in fact it's 40mm

Here is a comparison picture showing l/r: Monitor, Optimus 00 and Valor 55:

So, is this normal or am I right to wonder whether the roarer burner is a later fitment and it started life as a silent?

    Cheers,
    John

Hi John. The legs on your Monitor stove look to be far too long for the current riser tube and burner. I suggest they you read this post by Gary.

I tend to agree and, looking again at the photo, feel it could be that the burner is original (even a silent on that stubby little riser would probably be too low) and it's the legs that have been changed. I wonder if it’s a Monitor C11 Link with fixed legs replacing the ‘collapsible’ ones? Does the soldering look as though it was carefully done in a factory or slapped on with a trowel in someone's shed?

Trouble is, I can’t just unsolder the legs and reposition them as they are shaped around the tank similarly shortening them is also not a simple option and I don't really want to fit a silent burner as I have three already and really wanted a bigger roarer.

Hi John, a "fix" not involving any soldering would be to find some steel or brass tubing to provide a tight fit on the existing leg diameter. Cut the existing legs about inch above the tank, slip, say two inch lengths of tubing over them, shorten the remaining leg leg lengths to the required length and insert them into the tops of your tubes. You can use an adhesive such as Araldite if you want to keep the tubes in position.
    Just a thought,
    Best Regards,
    George.

What a clever idea George and in so doing could turn it (back?) into a 'Collapsible'. :)

    Cheers,

Given that, I wouldn't be inclined to faff about with it. But then, I'm a lazy old bu&&er... ;)
