Dear friends After a while with no significant news I came across a stove that I want to show you. Found it on the swap market at Naschmarkt Vienna. Was cheap as it was raining and it was cold... This is a strange stove, quite delicate piece of work. Pretty fancy construction for a small stove that seems rather good for warming up a cup of coffee. Well, after the usual cleaning it runs quite well on paraffin. I replaced the missing burner cap with a Phoebus/Optimus type which works fine but the burner bell suggests that the original cap is somewhat smaller. I should check Berniedawgs great caps... Country of origin: No marks on the stove itself, a nearly identical stove is shown on http://www.scherning.de/Lampen/Ugur_san.htm The instructions shown there seem Hungarian as was the guy selling the stove at the swap market. If someone can finally confirm this that would be helpful. Any hints welcome. cheers Mike
Here's a CCS post on a Kolibri stove. Looks identical to me. Kolibri Congratulations on a great find and on getting it working so well! What goes around comes around, meaning the link you've provided is in that post too (plus another useful one) and the proposition to enlist the help of BernieDawg was mentioned then too. John
Neat stove and nice job. In addition to the valve at the tank are there two controls at the burner, or is that just a way to attach the stove to the stand?
Hi John, Thanks for making me aware of that other post. Funny coincidence. Obviously the burner caps are easy to lose on these stoves... The second thing on the burner is just to attach it to the stand. There is indeed the nice valve at the tank and the burner has a cleaning needle. cheers Mike
Hi Mike, you have a lovely silent stove! You said that you thought the silent caps might be smaller than those from a No.5 burner. Here are some measurements of burner caps I took some time ago: Primus No.4 stove; Inner Cap = 33.5mmOD, but lip at bottom extends to about 35mm diam. Centre hole diam.= 16.3mm, Height = 14.5mm Outer Cap = 38mm OD, but about 40mm on lower lip. Height at max, the top is domed, = 24mm. 5 Rows of holes. Primus No.5 stove; Inner Cap = 39.5mmOD, 42mmOD on bottom lip. Centre hole diam. = 16.4mm. Max Height = 16mm Outer Cap = 44.6mm OD, 47mm on bottom lip. Max. Height = 26mm. 4 Rows of holes. Primus No.6 or No.25 (# 4142) Inner Cap = 44mmOD, 45mmOD on bottom lip. Centre hole diam. = 16.4mm. Max Height = 20mm. Outer Cap = 49mmOD, 52mmOD on bottom lip. Max Ht = 26mm. 5 or 6 Rows of holes. Can you identify whether your "new" stove uses one of these? Best Regards, Kerophile
Hi Kero, Thanks for giving these dimensions. I just measured myself and would say lower lip of outer cap 40-41 mm would be a perfect fit in the bell. Height of outer cap I would say should be 23-25 mm not more. This looks like a Primus Nr4 cap would be the one. My question is: is that equivalent to Berniedawgs Mini-cap? or where should I look for such a cap? Help would be appreciated cheers Mike
Mike, look no further than CCS's excellent sponsor, your namesake Mike at 'Base Camp'. It's listed there. George (Kerophile) is a great help, always. John
Hi Mike, The good news is that Mike at Base Camp has Con Outer silent caps at the bargain price of £1.50 each: Condrup were suppliers of pattern Primus parts, we have a small quantity of 'Con' brand, small steel silent burner caps at £1.50 to replace Primus part #4206/#4196,(stoves #4, #5jr & #34). Original #4196 brass caps are £5.00 each while stocks last The bad news is that Base Camp does not have the necessary inner caps for No.4 stoves. However, is you speak to Gary ( Bernis Dawg), who is also a fan of No.4 burners he might be willing to make you a suitable inner silent burner cap for a No.4 stove. Hope this Helps. Best Regards, Kerophile.
George, at risk of me sounding like a salesman for Base Camp "No.4 caps at £1.50? That sure is a bargain!" You're right about BernieDawg and the No.4 of course BernieDawg No.4 inner cap John
Thanks John and George You outlined the game plan for me. I will ask for such an inner cap as I think this nice and rather rare old stove deserves to get a perfectly fitting burner cap. Nice evening to both of you cheers Mike
Hello! Yes it is a hungarian "Colibri" Kerosene stove ! It's a joke, i'm hungarian but i never seen this before. I want it Bye !
Hey guys, Good to know that this is finally confirmed as a Hungarian stove. It is in good hands, and Vienna is pretty close to the hungarian border.. Here is my follow up on the thing with the inner cap: Big big thanks to Berniedawg who was so kind and sent me inner caps! While these were on the way I purchased outer caps (the original Primus 4 and the Condrup). I attach a picture of Bernies inner cap with the Primus outer cap. Perfect fit, flame pattern just shows some yellow in addition the the regular blue flames. I suppose that the jet may be responsible as it may be widened a bit over the years. Anyway, works fine overall and looks like it should. cheers Mike
Hi Mikespike! Your Kolibri is nice! i think, i'm lucky! Why? Because i find succesfully a kolibri stove, and i will buy that.
Hi Roy Well, seems like you were lucky too. The pictures don't show this well but the burner cap seems weird. You need to test if this works, I doubt that this is the original.. cheers Mike
Hi Roy Too funny. Where do these Colibris come from? What a coincidence! Did you get any of these stoves? Would be interested to see if everything works fine. The second one may have the original burner cap but not sure it may also be a replecement with a slightly larger one. You need to show action pictures once the stove is cleaned cheers Mike
Hello Mike! Ok i will restore them, but its not one week, because i working on other projects too. For example, 2 pieces hungarian storm lamp, one cold blast and one hot blast! Lampart 595 and Lámpagyár 598 . So im very busy And a pprimus touristkij (Optimus 8R clone) and a Primus Rekord1, and a KF Erikksos Prince 81, and a Phoebus No5, and a Primus No30 and...and and and i never will done
Hello! i started refurbishing my Kolibri. Your kolibri's kerosene tank is brass , but mine is steel and it has some hole Intresting! Fortunaltelly i hav an another Kolibri, so i have a donor Pictures soon!
Hi guys, Due to personal reasons I will need to significantly reduce my stove collection. This little gem I showed here could be one of the victims. Of course I would prefer to see that it goes to a fellow stove collector. If any one of you is really interested pls send me a PN. (As I got the great burner cap from Berniedawg for this as a gift from him I will make a donation in case I sell this stove to avoid any misunderstanding) cheers, Mike
