Hi all, I have got an optinus 99 and the spirit cup is def not the right one, looked around and cannot find a pic of one, has any one got any? O its an early one with the bent shield not the 8R one, thanks Mike.
Howdy, Mike, Welcome to CCS! See if this photo helps you any: If this still doesn't tell you what you want to know, give me a shout, and I'll remove a 99 spirit cup, and show you the cup, along, and alongside where it fits onto the burner. Take care, and God Bless!
magikbus asked: "Is the 99 jetted for Kerosene (paraffin)? Or could it be? Stan" Hi, Stan, This has been covered quite a few times here at CCS, and if you use the "search" function, you can seek out and read all the posts that deal with this subject. In a nutshell, the 99 was designed to burn Coleman fuel, or an equivalent fuel, like panel wipe, Naptha, Blazo, MSR fuel, etc., and does not work well with kerosene. Some folks have gone to extremes to make it happen, but the trouble is just not worth the results you will see. Please read all the posts about this, and I think you will find it's best to stick with the fuels original intended for this stove. Take care, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc
The Good Dr is correct, it is not worth the trouble to run one of these on kero... but it is fun to try. The 99 has a paraffin able jet, it is the same jet as a 111, but it wont burn kero, as the burner does not remain hot enough to vapourise kerosene, even if you get it going at the start. Here is mine, doing its best with a BD Midi cap (not mini). I have added pre heating "s sideburns " and a wind shield. It worked o.k. with kero/white fuel mix and o.k. with white fuel but straight kero did not work. Even with a standard flame spreader kero did not work. I think the case of the 99 can be a heat sink that takes heat away from the burner. I not have a mini cap to try this with but obviously that cap is purpose made for such stoves and may have been better in this silly experiment. Dan
Hi Mike, I may have just bumped your thread into the frankies section, sorry. As to the spirit cup, it screws to the base of the case, with one screw. Does yours? Dan
Hey, Yellowdog, Dan, your experiments have been very interesting over the years, and I've always enjoyed your posts about them!! Hey, you've enjoyed some very outstanding successes, along with a few failures, and that is a pretty good track record, me thinks!! To the original poster, if you want to see a 99 that came to me as a gift, but was a true bargain find for my Mother-in-law, who gave it to me, please check out this link: https://classiccampstoves.com/threads/14589 The flame pattern, size, and intensity is what you would get from a clean 99 that is up to spec. With this kind of performance, why much around with kerosene?! There are plenty of other stoves that were actually designed to burn that heavier fuel, but will give you the same great performance that my little 99 gives on Coleman fuel. Take care, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc
Thanks Dan for your informative reply. I have read many of the posts on this stove but couldn't find one with such a detailed "result" showing the shields you installed. I'm really not a nut case trying to convert everything I have to kerosene, it's just that optimus stoves are so rare around here and the shipping costs are so high that one must do what one must do. I have a specific need for a compact kero stove like the 111, where white gas, (ie: Coleman fuel) simply won't do. Stan
Hi Doc Mark, Thanks for the pics of your very nice 99, but the part I am looking to see is the bolt that attaches to the burner, the one on my 99 is round and has no flats which I believe it should, the hole in the spirit burner fits over the flange of the burner, must be 1/2 inch!! been on to Base Camp, they do not have any bolts or cups for a 99 so I am stuck. do you know of anywhere I can try? thanks for you help, Mike
Hi, Mike, Hang tight, as I've just taken some photos that should show you what you want to see. Be right back.... Doc
OK, Mike, Let's see if this tells you what you need to know? Here are four Optimus 99 stoves, all in original condition. All four have round screws that hold the burner and spirit cup to the bottom case. As you can see, the screws have regular flat-blade screwdriver slots, but no flats, as you mentioned. You will also see the parts diagram from an Optimus parts kit. So, how did that work for you? Can you see what you need to see? If not, then please post a photo of your own 99 stove, with the parts in question clearly visible, and I'll have another go for you. Take care, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc
Hi ALL, I will try to make it clearer what I am on about....the spirit burner is just a brass dish with a hole in the middle and no way to attach it to anything, it had a washer on the top to make the hole in it smaller so it would not slide up the burner. there is a threaded tube piece that screws to the bottom of the burner just like the spirit cup without the cup! Yes Andrew the cheese head screw goes through the casing and screws into the tube on the inside of the case, this is the part that I thought should have flats on so it will just go through the case. As the hole in the case is round at the top and bottom with flat sides so when the the piece goes through the case( mine will not as it is round) it holds the whole thing secure. The spirit cup on my 99 is not right at all as you can tell from this description. Hope I have made it clearer and you can understand what I am on about. I will try to take pics ASAP. thanks mike
Hi Mike As you are finding out a few pictures are worth several paragraphs... from your last message you mention the tube piece fixing to the burner base.. (item 2538 on the exploded parts picture) Is yours a hexagonal brass item with a slight shoulder to one end ? from your description it reads this may be a home made piece and not allowing the spirit cup to be secure ?? mean time I will see if I can see a decent image we can use. I have added an image from a fettling post, it shows the burner with the screw "extender" on...If this is correct for your stove, then ..we can move on to the cup being a bogus fit.
O/k I give up....I can not put pics on as it keeps telling me they are to big so how do you put them on?? thanks Mike
In the Stove Reference Section, check out the top item, Optimizer. That will downsize your photos. Just be patient, even I can do it now, most of the time. Duane
