Looking to get a pump for a ringed Svea 123. Do I want the straight pump model 2911s or the one that is offset at an angle? Can you still get it new or do you have to find a used one? Does the pump stay on or do you just use it for initial pressurization before starting and removing it before putting on windscreen? Going to get one before winter hits. Thanks
I think either one will work. I have the straight one. Remember that you need the fuel cap made to receive the pump. It does not stay on but is used to create a bit of pressure while priming the stove. I do three pumps, take it off, then light the priming pan. Some do a few pumps and then open the valve to dribble gas into the priming pan. I don't do that since I don't like the soot that comes with priming with gas. I prefer to prime with alcohol.
Either pump will work, but as said, you need the cap that goes with the pump. And, yes, they are only found used, or new old stock. They are no longer made. Hmm, I have always thought that the pump was to get enough pressure to dribble fuel into the priming pan for priming. I have, at times, pumped, dribbled fuel, replaced the pump cap with the original cap, then lit the priming fuel. I have never needed added pressure to run this stove. If I use alcohol, I do not need the pump. YMMV. Ken in NC
The pump probably would help start the stove in frigid temperature. At 5ºF or below, I usually need to double prime the stove to develop a durable flame when outside in a sheltered location. If I had the pump, pumping it a few times probably would allow one priming to build enough pressure for a strong start. If I come across a pump for sale, I might buy it. Double priming isn't difficult though and it's reliable. Late winter this year, I used a Trangia with a Clikstand burner stand and windscreen. After carrying the burner in a pants pocket for an hour, the fuel was warm enough to light right up in 7ºF with a couple of strokes off the firestick.
One drawback to the pump...the stove STILL NEEDS A PREHEAT if you pump it up and think you can open valve and light it off you will have burning drops of liquid fuel spraying out of stove. Pumps are fun, I have a couple, but not really needed. But how many of our toys are needed
That's right; it just doesn't need to be primed twice. That stove is one of my tools in winter. It's a toy to you.
So once the stove is running, no pumping needed unlike coleman stoves? I was thinking you kept the pump on to keep the tank pressurized during cold winter days thru the entire cooking. I'm glad i posed the question. Double priming seems easier.
@Mustang67ford Yes it self pressurizes and does not need pumps to keep running. It will start of slow but in few minutes it’s roaring like a chopper! I tried a pump on mine. Found I did not e er use it as I prime with alcohol. Hope this helps
Can someone post a picture of the proper cap to go with the mini-pump and educate me about same? I picked up a Sigg set with q 123R and pump but don't know about the cap. Thanks
Having a few pumps in font helps it get to full speed quite a bit faster than it would wo pumping, these can be a bit anaemic for the first few minutes. I never pump mine once it is running, like was said, heat creates pressure. And I only go 3-4 pumps.
The guys covered the question well, I have one pump, for the cold winter use, it boosts the output. Don't use it in warmer seasons Ivan
I never tried the denatured alcohol. Usually use the eye dropper and open the fuel tank to get primer fuel but sometimes i cant get the lid open. Also dont like the soot. Will try the alcohol. What do you guys carry the alcohol in?
@Mustang67ford I carry a small Nalgene dropperbottle I got from REI. Works great! I sometimes use my Trangia fuel bottle but anything works. Clear eyes bottle works too.
Decided to not get a pump at this time. Doing a double prime burn sounds easier. Picked up denatured qlcohol but have yet to try it.
@Mustang67ford I only use Denatured alcohol to prime all my stoves. Rarely do I use fuel from the tank. Just keeps things clean and soot free. Things will darken but not turn all black and sticky. I have only ever had to double prime in really cold weather.
I picked up a 0.5oz bottle of eye drops from the dollar general but the bottle won't fit in the stove unless i set it flat on top the burner then the pot does not go down the whole ways. I'm trying to keep the bottle in the stove itself.
