I am trying to rebuild an old SVEA 123R (made in Sweden) stove. I cannot get the spindle removed from the tank. I have tried WD-40 and heating with a propane flame. I don't have a vice and I am a woman so my arm strength is limited. Any suggestions? Thanks.

    Hi Gigi
    Welcome here.

They can be quite hard to remove - please be careful not to turn your spindle into an expensive Cork screw.

I can recommend letting the thread soak for a couple of days in a 50/50 mix of Acetone and Transmission Oil combined with a bit of tension both tighten/untighten during the days.
It may come loose then, after heat is applied again.

Instead of a vice - you might get a firm grib with an oil filter wrench like this around the tank/fount:

Just make sure the diameter correspond between the tank/fount and the wrench. I put a piece of leather between the wrench and the stove not to scratch it.

    Good luck.

Yes I have removed those parts. They came off easily. Here’s a photo.

It seems that you mean to remove the vaporizer from the tank?

    @Gigi Galbreath and @snwcmpr
Gigi - I misunderstood your posting at first, as Ken/Snwcmpr also mentions. I have adjusted my post accordingly now.
(Yours look like an old 123?)

Perhaps. I don't know so well what the parts are called. I was going by what someone in a YouTube video called it. But yes, vaporizer it is!

Good idea about the oil filter wrench. I wonder if I still have one? I will try the soaking approach. Thanks.

The wrench can give you a firm hold on the stove - just be carefull not to dent the fount/tank while using it as the brass is quite soft metal.
I keep my actetone/Transmission Fluid in an airtight old jam jar with a screw on lid. It can work wonders with a bit of patience.

Hi, Why do you want to remove the vaporiser from the tank? Perhaps the wick is OK and the work you are doing on the burner will be sufficient for good operation.
However, it’s your stove so have a look at this link:

I want to remove it to check the wick because it seems as though the fuel is not flowing properly. I am getting a lot of sooting and yellow flames. Just seemed like it would be worth looking into. The stove is probably from the 70s and no maintenance has ever been done on it.

Thanks everyone. I also can’t figure out how to get the penta wrench one needs to replace the pip seal in the SRV cap. I’ve seen mention of filing a hex wrench but have no idea how to do that to wind up with the correct size. This stuff is harder than I imagined.

Awww, yes, the fun of fettling is not always as easy as one would think.
    But fun it is.

The link above is a good bit of good information.

That penta tool has been available, then not available. Making one seems the best way. The inexpensive options can damage the cap. Overseas shipping has caused the latest problems.

Indeed! I made a penta tool out of an old tent stake. Took awhile to file it by hand. But it worked! Thanks! I’m sure I will need more help. Still working in the vaporizer.

Hi, Wow! That is impressive. Good luck with the rest of the fettle. If in doubt of any element be sure to ask.
    Best Regards,
    Kerophile.

    Well done.

Penetrating oil and patience may be needed to remove the vaporizer.
They can be tight. Too much force can warp the thin brass tank.

Do not use an oil filter wrench it will damage the tank, use kroils penetrating oil let it sit a few days before giving it a go.

Where/when able, I like to rap on parts to maybe help break them loose. Heat, oil too.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I finally got it loose but had to resort to the oil filter wrench after days of soaking and heating. I was very careful and I don’t think the tank was damaged.

Now I’m wondering which wick to use for the rebuild. 10 or 14 strand?
