    I can't believe he filled that alcohol stove with petrol. Good restoration but he should have consulted CCS before firing it up.

    That said (dangerously wrong fuel), early French alcohol stoves with gravity-fed burners often offered a gasoline (essence) version of the same stove, having a smaller-bore jet to create the correct fuel/air ratio.

    ‘Matador’ brand for example.

    Strangely, the "essence" one is slightly cheaper than the "alco" variant. It would be interesting to know the price for both fuels back then. The (white, un-doped) petrol version will be less thirsty but more sooty than the alco version so, unless alcohol used to be much cheaper, maybe users didn't mind a bit of soot on their pots & pans? Economics were rather important to most working class heros!
