Hi! I'm knee-deep in the rabbit hole of classic stoves since discovering this thing, half buried, in the shed. I've searched and searched, but I can't find the exact model. Similar to a 111 but the case is completely different. Could it be a cheap knock-off? Or a hybrid? It comes with an Optimus funnel and multi-tool. It has Optimus markings on the knob, but nothing on the case (except for the Protex latch). Anyway, I'm curious about it, so any clues welcome! Pictures follow.
That is Nomad Nova multifuel stove: Nomad Nova Multi Fuel Stove Internals are from Optimus and case is custom made. If I remember correctly some company in UK made those for disaster and/or relief organisations. Around 8-10 years ago several of them were for sale in UK ebay. There were few different variants with different type of case or with different internals. (Use search to find more of them in 'reference callery') @Staffan Rönn Might know some interesting details how Optimus parts were sold for company which made those Nomad stoves.
I picked that 'Nomad Nova' name from linked thread, but that is name that was used in that thread. Maybe just 'Nomad' would be more better name . Nova refers to Optimus Nova stove, but internals are same as in Optimus Hiker+ stove. Maybe Nomad Hiker+ would describe that stove so that origins of internal parts would be defined/indicated .
Thanks for all that information, Afterburner! I'm going to look into it and hopefully get it started soon.
Coffee on a Shelterbox Nova stove. Is there an obscure or specialized Optimus 111 model we never see?
If tank is empty and stove has not been used for some time just in case check with magnet whether the tank is made from steel or brass. If magnet sticks into tank i.e. tank is made of steel try to check that there is no rust inside of the tank and rinse tank well before use. Those steel tanks might get some rust: Hiker Silent brassification and rust (dust) is not good for flame control parts nor for the jet.
Welcome @G-bag ! your "I'm knee-deep in the rabbit hole of classic stoves since discovering this thing, half buried, in the shed." Off to a good start and have done well. Details have been linked . I'll quote a nutshell that relates to your Nomad: and say CONGRATS !! you lucky bastard
Thanks everyone! Currently going through the links! There were major bushfires in my area in 2009. Many neighbours lost their homes. Maybe this unit came from a disaster relief operation. The tank is steel, but I don't see any rust. Actually, it looks almost new. I drained the tank (clear fuel – white spirit?) then rinsed and now it's draining upside down. Next I'll take a look at the burner and see if it needs cleaning, and figure out which fuel to use.
Essentially a standard Optimus Hiker+(last 111 with Nova burner) in a larger and sturdier box - made to use white gas, kerosene, jet fuel or diesel - but it is optimized for lamp/camping kerosene and usually works best if you throttle down a little from max. My new Optimus 111 Hiker + Some mil spec versions are tuned for diesel or jet fuel and usually have a different throttle handle.
Just a small fact from earlier postings- these use the Nova burner not the Hiker+. Different fuel path.
So there are optimus burners able to burn/vaporize this difficult diesel "thing"/fuel! I am VERY curios how army dudes manage to do that! Could light heating oil DIN-51603-1 be used? I'm interested because it can be bought by the 1000-3000 liter quantity at about 40% less money per liter compared to regular diesel fuel!
I would guess that Diesel and light heating oil will burn some how in Optimus Nova burners. But: -they are not pure as kerosene, there can be some small particles from storage & etc. -they contain also higher boiling point distillation components, so the maybe not go through evaporation process as kerosene and eventually they cause residue contamination in burner -current Diesel & light heating oil contains bio components and they absorb water which can enable bacteria & fungus growth Microbial contamination of diesel fuel - Wikipedia Bacteria & fungus creates 'lump of living organisms' that can cause blockage in stove I would use Diesel and heating oil only in emergency situations if no other fuel is not available. Even then I would try to find some gasoline that could be mixed into Diesel/heating oil to make it more easily burnable. Army dudes almost always have spare stoves available so they get another stove I one stove stops working. Non-working stove will be sent for repair (=burner is changed to new one).
