Hi guys, could someone point me to an exploded view of a ‘53 Primus 71 showing the shaped packing washer because I’ll be damned if I can find one. Is it something that Primus hadn’t come up with yet, and does the Optimus 80 have one? I’m trying to service my 71 and trying to work out whether it should or shouldn’t have one. Thanks in advance
It was quite a simple question. Posted after countless searches of the gallery etc. Both Kerophile and Snwcmpr advised Sean Galvin in a previous post, to replace the shaped washer that goes before the packing flat side in. I just can’t find a mention of said washer anywhere else. I messaged Fettlebox but have had no reply as of yet. Hey ho, no rush.

One some burners, there is a brass disc that has a flat and a curved side. Where this is present the above instruction is correct. This illustration of the Primus 71 does not show such a brass part. It does show part 4102 (which, see below, is a graphite washer). [From: https://classiccampstoves.com/threads/1962-primus-catalogue.37488/] In a 1953 catalogue, this part is described as “packing of graphite for box to Primus 71L”: [From: https://classiccampstoves.com/attachments/primus1950s_041-jpg.185956/] In this thread I show the servicing of a similar burner on the Svea 123. It has the same components as the Primus 71 illustrated above: Svea 123 Disassembly Cheers Tony
Not every stove has the brass ring washer. In case there is one, the concave side of it should face the graphite packing. That washer is usually found on spindles that acts on a needle rack, like 8r or 123r. In case of simple spindles that acts only as shut off (Optimus 8 or Svea 123) usually it’s not present. The graphite is compressed against the incorporated brass wall through which the spindle screws in into the valve (sorry if not clear but it’s hard to explain in English). So the 71, not having an incorporated needle system, shouldn’t have that brass washer. Nicola
Exactly. This large screwing part of the spindle on 8r or 123r alike stoves doesn’t allow to have a compressing surface inside the valve, so the brass washer is there to allow the graphite to be compressed. On 71,8 or 123, with thin spindle and without cleaning system the valve itself includes a surface to compress the packing. So in those cases the brass washer is not needed. Nicola
Nicola & JP2 you’re stars. Thankyou. That’s answered my question, thanks for all the replies. I have a 123r and know of the washer, but having read about it in relation to the 71 I wondered if mine was missing. Obviously not. Thanks again.
Glad you're sorted. I've checked my messages & can't see anything. Your graphite tape is on it's way.
