Another bog standard Svea No.11 here. Conforms to specifications outlined in 1908 and 1915 catalogues, and has the pre-1917 format Russian legends, but how late did Svea keep this model in production in this form?

So far so good; all seems very sound and original. But then the challenges appear; first the burner tubes are clearly badly blocked up, a far as flame goes this is as much as gets through:

and worse, nice though it will be to retain the original burner, the tubes are also badly corroded on the outside and one is leaking on seam:

Now that, for me, is going to be a whole new level of challenge to try to sort out!

You have got some impressive stoves/lamps Ian.

Have a go sil-brasing this burner yourself, you will surprised how easy it is.

'Conforms to specifications in 1908 and 1915 catalogues' - true, but comparison with other external NRV Sveas now makes me think this example can be dated more precisely to the latter part of this period or even into the 1920s. The main reason for thinking this is the inscription on the pump tube cap (see photo above) - this filler cap version is definitely from a later date than those otherwise identical stoves, still from within the same catalogue period, which had tube caps inscribed 'Nyberg Patent' (see posting of pre-WW1 Svea 11).

hehe never seen external nrv before - thought it was overpressure valve. So my first stove got pump housing replaced to primus regular internal style nrv....after i understod that ive completely wrecked the original pump housing and its internal pipe...oh well....

    @igh371

I have two questions re this stove:

    1. Does the spirit dish have any Svea marking?

    2. Is the pressure release screw marked only on one side?

    Best regards

    Tony

    2 easy answers Tony,

    1. The Svea name is on only one side of the filler cap

    2. No markings of any sort on the priming spirit ring.

Same applies to all of my other Sveas of this age.

@igh371 it’s always hard to pass on a nice Svea. The best part of it it’s the original burner. I have a similar on a 12 if I remember, so the smaller burner.

In this case I would date it toward 1915 than 1920… when Svea Cbea appeared on the burners?

Any thoughts on the sequential relationship of the burner mark change with that to the 'Svea' marked pump tube cap (present here) from the earlier 'Nyberg Patent' cap version?

@igh371 Ian, you should know better than me, it’s very hard to find a Svea with the original burner, harder to find many with original burner to establish a sequence, but…

…this same burner is also on this 11 with early pump cap: Svea No.11 c.1909/10

So, because a burner can’t be retro fitted on a stove (I mean finding an older burner on a later stove), I would say that this type of burner is the earliest and can be dated also 1908 or earlier, so available on the 11 since the beginning (do we know another early cross roarer burner style for Svea?), while on model 1 the tubolar 801 was the standard.

The next and better known Svea roarer with Svea Cbea on it is probably introduced in the 1920s, when still were available the “bubble font” Svea. To confirm this I have an unfired Svea 8 in the gallery with Svea Cbea burner.

I will make an observation of some models to make a more precise conclusion.

And I add, the style of competitors burners in 1908-10 was very similar… Only Primus, only Optimus stamped on burners… later we start to see other languages and translations for export, as well made in Sweden.

Here is another: Svea No.11 c.1908 variant.

So, my conclusion is that the Svea only marked burner is the earliest Svea cross roarer burner, in use since 1908 or earlier… on models 9 and 11. To better date up to 1915 we need to check bottom stamping and pump cap.

So models 9 and 11 are the only reference for the earliest 811 burner for the 1908 and earliest examples.

To check model 16 as well, because burner 811 was used also on this model starting from 1915…

So if none of the 16 show this burner we can safely say that the 811 was updated to Svea Cbea style around 1915…

    I hope it’s clear.

Ok, selecting only the models that look fully original:

    Svea 9 (Svea Cbea) SVEA - 9

Svea 9 (Svea Cbea) Svea No 9

    Svea 9 (Svea Cbea) Svea N° 9

    Svea 9 (Svea Cbea) 1910s mid / early 1920s Svea No.9

Svea 16 (Svea only) Svea No.16, early 1920s

Other models of 16 are way later than the ones of interest for this study.

So, looking at the above, three 11s, only one 16 and no 9s show the 811 with Svea only branding.

The conclusion is, for me, that the Svea only mark identifies models in the timeframe 1908/1915-18 max…

So maybe the Svea Cbea burners appeared after WW1.

To enlarge this study we should check all the models that use the smaller 810 burner, as well found with Svea only marking.

    So to check models 8-10-12-30-40…

In any case the study on 811 already gives an answer.

    @Nicola Francesco Elia

I went through all the Svea 11 Refrence Gallery posts yesterday, and I agree with your logic so far. My purpose for doing so was to find period correct parts for this Svea No. 11:

    SVEA No: 11 c. 1910's

@Tony Press I have spare filler caps, air release key and other bits for most of the earliest Svea stoves. Apart the burner obviously. If you need anything I can send them to you.

I have one of the “Svea/Cbea” burners, but not a period-appropriate “Mickey Mouse” filler cap or pressure release screw (Svea on one side). It doesn’t really matter, though.

    Cheers
