Primus 41 (roarer)

As promised in Rusty but Running I have a bunch more photos of my new to me No. 41.

“Weathered” case aside it is in good condition and has boiled a few kettles and made a few coffees in the past week. I really like it and the little details that it has.

I think I would like a silent burner more however

My only grumble is that the burner sits very close to the pot rest - there is only less than 1cm between the top of the burner and the pot. That the burner doesn’t rest on the case, but tilts upwards a little because of the weight of the fuel tank does not help. I may see what I can do to bend the fuel pipe a little.

As I can see it getting a lot of use I am considering getting it powder coated. Far from its original finish, but much more durable than paint.

congratulations on a fantastic score,i personally i would love to own one, even more than the 111.

I agree powder coating is a far more durable finish, the only down sides is not getting the original finish and colour match, i would definitely insulate the bottom of the case to prevent it being scorched, another point if you ever want to remove the plastic coating for any reason its much harder to do so, but a possible advantage using powder coating it could smooth out all the pitted surface after the rust has been removed, as we see in the picture there is heavy surface rust, this wonderful stove has been stored in a very damp environment, i shall take great interest in this post and look forward to seeing this old beauty up and running

 

Very nice stove find . Powder coating will stand up to 500F . Maybe think about Cerakote C series air dry . Up to 1800f many colors available . Find someone to do it or DIY if you have airbrush / spray equipment . Just my $.02 .

 

I don't recommend the powder coating, too hard, it become brittle with time and is very difficult to remove, even sandblasted.

 

Thanks @mr optimus I am very pleased with it. Looking at the other items the seller had available I think it came off a boat down Chichester way.

@William Ritchie (other than a half face respirator) I don’t have the equipment to consider powder coating myself.

Given my iffy experience with the durability of retail rattle cans, what other options are available?

A bit of googling turns up a selection of more expensive (and I expect more ‘complicated’ paints, safety-wise) like Braunoliv/Olive Drab Aerosol Spray Paint | Aerosols Direct

1k, 2k, cellulose, polyurethane, …

would any of them fit the bill and be suitable for use by me in my shed?

My 111, nickel plated
It was severely rusted
The finish could be better but it is now rescued

 

I have one it is with a roarer burner too. They are a good quality stove so just restore it. Mine gets used a lot.
