Yes, but they say "put the cogs against the cogs of the spindle". The problem is I don't know which direction that is.
The needle will only physically fit into the burner in one location. There's no option of placing it on the other (incorrect) side of the spindle.
Your question is akin to 'I have just removed a lightbulb from a socket and am unsure which way to put it back in'.
Just stab the tip of the cleaning needle into a pencil eraser or use small tweezers to hold it in place, very easy. It’s child’s play.
I placed the needle in the hole with the help of a pencils eraser and screwed the jet in place. When I turned the wheel to the left the needle will not be visible in the hole of the jet. So I unscrewed the jet, but now it's impossible to remove the cleaning needle. It's stuck. I've tried with both a pencil eraser and a pair of pliers.
@Still Alive Without trying to pull the rack+needle out, are you able to (carefully) raise and lower the needle with the control wheel? Edit: I'm assuming now that, as you've said above, you have taken the nipple (jet) off the stove. Tony
Yes, I've removed the jet. But the needle is stuck. When I turn the wheel to the left the needle becomes visible, but I can't remove it.
Theoretically, turning the wheel fully to the left (anti-clockwise) should allow the needle to fall out if the stove if turned upside down. Can you please photograph the needle in the burner at its highest point. Be very careful not to force anything. Cheers Tony
Mmm… that should be able to come out. I’m assuming the teeth are engaging properly with the spindle (teeth facing the tank). Carefully gripping the brass rack (not the needle), can you wobble it loose? Do this with the stove upside down. Tony
Oh, so the teeth should face the tank. Another member of CCS refused to tell me how I should place the needle, so maybe I placed it wrongly. I tried removing the needle with a pliers. I turned the stove upside down, but I can't remove the needle.

Take a look at Regulated burner cutaway to see how the burner is constructed and understand how the mecanism works. The flow of the fuel is regulated by the tip (cone) of the spindle openening/closing against the cone-shaped hole from the supplying tube. Spindle to the right closes off. The rack with the needle is not needed for operation as a stove, it is just a helping device to poke through the jet occasionally by turning the spindle to the left for a short time - therefore pushing dirt out the jet. In normal operation, the rack sits quite down, as not to obstruct the jet. If it is placed to low, the spindle can not close properly as the rack bottoms out, if it ist to high the burner never runs right as the needle obstructs the jet. Unless the teeth on the rack (and/or spindle) are almost completely ground away, you could not mount the rack in the wrong direction without huge amounts of force. Did you by any chance mount the rack when the spindle was turned as far left as possible? (spindle stopping on graphite packing). If yes, and you had to wiggle it in/down, that might explain why you can't get it out now. So you might try to loosen the packing nut a little (say 1/4 - 1/2 turn) and try to turn the spindle a tiny bit more to the left while holding the rack/needle upwards. Though maybe wait till others confirm that is good idea.
