    @Twoberth @Doug L there isn't necessarily any problem with the over stamp date letter C being different to a standard date letter C. In fact the letter dies used for the over-stamping do seem to most often use a different font, specifically a more elaborate font with serifs. See for example the type of 'E' used over an original 'D' on these 2 Primus No.4 stoves (here and here). There are other examples too but they take a lot of searching out! I can only assume that the use of different fonts for the alteration must have been intentional for some reason or another.

    Good points Ian.
    I must admit, a C over a B is the most logical chronological explanation.

    ‘Serif’. That was the word I was groping for.
    Much more elegant that ‘little vertical dash’. :oops::doh:

    Knew there was an example somewhere. Here is a 'C' over 'A' - a 'C' with the serifs too:
    DSC07614.JPG I think this 'C' compares well with the 'C' on Doug's 96L above.

    Yep. Good hard evidence.
    Thanks.

    Hi Arch. Thanks for the insights. This, as I said, was my grandfather’s kit when he was a Scout. It’s been sitting in a closet and I recently pulled it out and gave it a good cleaning. It’s ALL there too! It’s really special!

    @Ames
    Welcome to CCS
    It's a fine looking stove with a great family history. Congratulations :thumbup:
    A new set of seals will probably see it working again.

    The graphics on the box are in good shape too. A real family treasure! It would definitely be worth your time and effort to get it working. Fixing a pot of tea on a cold day with your grandfather's stove would be a treat.

    Congratulations on a rare gem. Regardless of the double stamp the box is the treasure. Only used for a few years it is the coolest 96 tin box of all
    I have my guard dog watching over mine.
