Hi my second post. My 111T survived its first weekend, works well and now for the cleanup prior to the big camping trip to the farm (five or six families - some heavy weight backpackers amongst them - all gas cannister stove types with one trangia user) What I would like to know is some history of the 111 series? Items like dates of manufacture, change over fromm 111 - 111B -111T-111c etc. I know that the 111T had period of manufacture with a o-ring in the pump and then went back to leather cups etc. Does anyone know a simple timeline for this sries so that I cn get my bragging in early when I fire up the 111T? regards .......Paul
That's something I have wondered about, having two of them? I assume the 111 is descended from the Campingo. Another thing i wanted to know is that I have seen brochure images of a roarer 111 with a short pump in the side of the tank. I think the brochure was early 1950s. Ross had a facsimile of it on his display at Pickering one year. How long did that variant last? It's a family history we need to know.
Is this what you had in mind? The 111 has the pump in the top of the tank as opposed to the now normal pisition of to the right hand side of the tank ! Spudz
Hey, Primus 96, Here are a few shots of my own model of that stove. I won it last year, on eBay, after my Stove Brother, Evil, declined to bid, once he found out that I was in the fray! It cost a pretty penny, and shipping from Sweden was very high, but it was worth every cent!! This shot shows it in comparison to it's most modern Brother, the 111C. Here's one of the front of the tank, with it's interestingly mounted pump. The pump rod is very short, compared to a normal 111 series stove. The burner, from the side. And, again, from the top. And, now, for the BIG surprize: This stove is NOT an Optimus 111, but rather the slightly earlier, I believe, Optimus #11 model!!!! 8) I think you may be correct in your assumption that the 111 stoves descended from the Campingo stove. Rik also has another stove that very well fits into the lineage, too, though I forget which model that one is. How about a photo of your stove, Rik? So, it's for Ross, or someone else, to actually come up with a direct lineage for the 111 stoves, complete with dates, and model numbers. But, it's fun thinking about it, isn't it??!! To me Irish/Italian Brother, Ye Gads!! I hear disembodied voices, telling me to fight the stove!!! NO, I can't fight any of my stoves!! They are my friends, I tell you, my good friends!! NO, I will resist the weird music and the eerie voices!! I will NOT fight my stove!!!! What? You say you meant to LIGHT the stove???? #-o Well..... that's very different, then! (Spudz.....the answer is still NO!!!) 8) At this time, this is one of those stoves that shall not see the flame! Like my Optimus #3, this #11, and a very few others, shall be kept as they are, and as pristine as I can keep them. Well this is the second one got burnt on the first was a 199 bad burner fix now new burner. This one just came 111 kero costumer said nice condition yep the burner no stem no nut no packing burner lose on tank a vice mark on burner like he tried to fix it the burner tube bent to the left one missing pot holder but nice shape good thing i got a new burner for it mite as well give a new paint job like desert storm color dont hurt your eyes looking[ P. S. new burner is at top waiting for its new home]
Hi Doc I had forgotten how wonderful your Optimus N0 11 is. And yes, you will of course not light it. You, me, David S and a few others are of a like mind when it comes to lighting stoves. If they have never been used and are not still in production, then I will not light the stove, otherwise it will become just another used stove. The numbers of unused stoves are getting smaller with each passing year. The same does not always apply to fully restored stoves. But when the restoration is well done and the stove is rare, then the same rule can be applied. I know that others do not share this point of view and take great delight in lighting an unused, rare stove. Still - each to his/her own!! |imgRemoved|
Hey Doc, Primus 96 et.al That Optimus 11 is one very fine stove, I am envious that you can "keep your Mitts off it" and not feel the urge to fire it up. I nearly broke down the shed door to fire up my 111T when I brought it home. Thanks for your thoughts re the farm ... I am looking forward to it. regards ... Woolbay
Doc, I, of course, expected nothing less than the response you gave, but couldn't resist a gentle tease the n.11 is a beautiful stove, and you are correct in your choice - for you - in not lighting it, since you can gain similar pyro pleasures from any of your many other stoves I consider myself somewhat fortunate, in that I am not faced with the dilema of having to chose to light an unused stove or not - how does Evil do it, with all those wonderful shiny stoves, new in tins, that he keeps acquiriing At this stage of my stove addiction. I'm enjoying the few basic fettles that I have managed, and putting match to meths to .. Enjoy the Flame Take care Spudz
Morning, Spudz, Trevor, Ian, Henry, Woolbay, and All, Yes, to light, or not to light. THAT, is the question! For me, it's not hard, at all, to keep a select few of my stoves unlit, however. My Optimus #3 came to be brand new, with spares, in it's original wooden crate. I have never seen another brand new one, and so believe that mine is quite rare. It is worth far more to me, personally, and financially, if I do not light it, and I have really no desire to do so. Ornament? Sure. Why not? What's your point??!! 8) Some of my older stoves, which I think are special, also have earned special consideration on my part. Why would I want to fire up my Optimus #11, when I've never seen a nicer one? The few others I've seen on FleaBay, were really in need of work, while mine is in excellent shape. I have lots and lots of other stoves with which to play, and have NO desire to light up the #11. It's earned it's rest, and I love having it as an "ornament"!! Pleasure, Lads, is where you take it!! And, I take great pleasure in having a few select stoves, which will never be lit, at least as long as I am their owner!! With somewhere around 350+ stoves, from which to choose, there is certainly no impetus to fire up every single one of them, and there is lots of impetus to keep a select few in as fine a shape as they are in now!! Each to his/her own, however, and I have no qualms about others firing up every single burning device that comes their way! Go for it, I say!! I shall do so, too.
