I had my vererable 111 Hiker go down days ago and it very nearly proved fatal from hypothermia.

I run alcohol only in my 111, and had A&H rebuild the stove two years ago specifically for that fuel only. It's been running like a champ until recently- and it get year-round use.

It seems there is some problem with the vaporiser. The first symptoms were that the flame would not form properly away from the burner dome, then caused it to glow orange, killing any chance for proper jet formation. For a short while I could get it running full flame only, but not now. None of my bag of tricks learned over many years with my 111 would work.....

I never treat my Optimus harshly, and clean the needle regularly. I use standard Hardware Store denatured alcohol and never had a problem til now.

    Any ideas?

    111t ?

Without knowing what you have tried. I would suggest
    _ missing inner cap
    - missing restrictor
    - wrong fuel
    - contaminated fuel

I would also say there are plenty of simple stoves such as trum sports that are lighter, fool proof and are made for alcohol

Would it be safe to assume (there's that word again!) you use fresh alcohol? Moisture will collect in alcohol since it is hydrophylic, the main reason I never store any of my stoves long term with fuel in them; let them run empty. As stated before check the obvious and go from there. You may also want to consider that the oraface is too large now from cleaning with a pick tool. The flame tips wanting to disunite from the burner may be from fuel starvation. Try cleaning the rolled brass screen that is inside the fuel feed tube. Some photos of your conundrum may help, otherwise we all be daft.

Leak somewhere on the burner, loose jet or not seated properly anymore? I had a couple nice running kero stoves running fine last year and this winter they decided to go to under burn after a few minutes of running. Both silent burners. I had to put some thread goop on the jets and they were back to running great.

Hardware store denatured alcohol is not all the same stuff. Even the same brands might switch formulations occasionally -- if you read the MSDS, the quantities of the various additives can vary a great deal.

So, if you recently bought a new can, you may want to try some different alcohol just in case.

I'd check if the metal gauze roll isn't fouled from alcohol use

it wont rust is it is brass but it could get scale clog buildup becuase alcohol if hydrophilic (likes to bond with water)cuaseing a scale buildup in tanks and parts and such if stored in it

    just a thought
