Usually old and ineffective CF has a distinct sour odor - otherwise normal filtering with one of their funnels works fine. As an added note, some Coleman folks add a couple of tablespoons of Seafoam Carburator Cleaner to each new gallon can of CF to help keep internal lantern and stove parts clean.
