I just recently got my hands on a 111T that had been refurbished. After lighting it for the first time (on kerosene) I noticed that it was extremely lean. So lean that it had a hard time staying lit. It would simply blow itself out at any more than a very low flame. Has anyone had problems with their 111Ts running lean when running on the stock 2509 jet. I tried cleaning the jet and even tried a spare that I had, but still got a very lean burn. Then I used a 2510 jet from a 111B and the thing runs great. Nice clean blue flame with kerosine and it behaves very well on white gas with the proper restricter in place. As far as I'm concerned I’ve got the stove running fine and I'm happy with it. What bothers me is why doesn’t the specified jet work. What bothers me more, is how is a jet made for much lower BTU stoves (the 123R and 8R) suppose to provide the necessary fuel flow much higher output burners like the 111T the 5R and the 207 burner? Here is a picture of the 111T with 2510 jet and a home made petrol restrictor in place running on white gas. The restrictor is made from 17/32 OD brass tubing with four 15/64 holes drilled 5/16 from the base of the the tube. This reduces the air opening from .23 sq. inches to .172 sq. inches a 25% reduction in air. It seem to work quite well.

As I said I'm not to concerned with how the stove runs now, but why wont it run with a stock jet?

    Hello,

Why are you using a restrictor with kerosene and white gas? You don't need it.

The jet size is only one factor in BTU output. Pressure, vaporizing ability and fuel/air mixture are key. The 207 burner can vaporize fuel far better than the 8r can. The restrictor is cutting air flow to the burner. Try running the stove without it.

Optimus originally supplied a restrictor for use with white gas in addition to the alcohol restrictor. With out it the burner runs to lean and tends to blow itself out. This is all in keeping with Optimus's instructions and make good sense from a theoretical point of view. In short according to the instructions, on kerosene no restictor, on white gas the petrol restrictor (the one with four holes), on alcohol the alcohol restrictor (the one two holes). As I said the stove is running fine on both kerosine and petrol, my concern is why it wont with the stock jet part #2509.

Yes one restrictor for gasoline and one for alcohol. But white gas needs no restrictor along with kerosene. It should work great with the stock jet #2509. Is there a marking on the jet? Is the cleaning needle set right? :-k

My money is on the jets though.
    Strange. :-k

The burner was refurbished by A&H as it came to me from them it has no cleaning needle. I dont get why that would make it lean, but its the only peice that is not as it should be. There is no marking on the jet. I do know that it works fine in my 123R, and both of these stoves use the same jet.

    Strange.

The cleaning needle set too high will cause similar problems. You don't need a cleaning needle to run the stove though.

Is there any water in the fuel?

Range of Jet Sizes Used for Optimus 206/207B burner
    ±.02mm(.0008") wo/noticable change
    Alcohol 0.51mm(.020")/no air restrictor #2508
    isopropane 0.45mm(.018")
    White Gas 0.37mm(.015") #2510
    Kerosene 0.28mm(.011") #2500/#2509
    Mjet-k/wg=0.032mm(.013") #2502/#2509
    Mjet-alcohol=. 032mm(.013")+air restrictor #2502/#2509

If you look at the jet sizes above, you'll see it's still starved for fuel. Increasing the jet size and cutting air, is the same as decreasing jet size and increasing air. Three problems to look into cap seal and clogged screen in the feed line, or a coked burner. It sounds like the burner is just not getting fuel.

I am not sure what you are saying there, Rick.

There is no seperate needle, like a pricker: these burners have a build-in needle. The suggestion is made by Jeff that the inside needle sits too high on the pinion of the spindle, partly closing off the fuel mixture that only gets worse when 'opening up'.
Whichs explains perfectly what you describe: lean, weak flame at first, flame out when opening up, and a good all-round performance with a bigger nozzle.

If there is no needle under that jet you have been changing, you got short-changed.
And in that case I am just as clueless as you.

    Good luck, Mike

    Evening, Guys,

I once got a nice old Optimus 22 from NZ, and really look forward to completing the almost finished fettle of it. (Hey, only a couple of years to finish!!)  In any case, when I took the jets off, to see about the cleaning needles, there didn't appear to BE any!! However, the burners would not burn as well as they should have, and so I did a complete dismantle of them, and guess what I found? Both cleaning needles!!! The spindle teeth had all been stripped completely, and both needles were crammed way down inside the burners, below where they should have been in the first place!! How they got there, I have NO idea! But, I removed what was left of them, and cleaned up both burners, which are just awaiting installation of two brand new rebuild kits, which I've had for many years!!! Should work a treat after I FINALLY get off me arse and finish the fettle!!

Might be worth you removing the jet, then peering deep inside the burner, through the wrench hole in the top of the burner, to see if there are remains of a needle down there. But, if your stove burns well, with a different jet, then I'm pretty sure that's not the problem, in any case. Just thought I'd toss in my two cents on missing needles. Take care, and God Bless!

    Every Good Wish,
    Doc

P.S. As has been mentioned, you don't "need" that needle for the stove to run, but it might be nice to have it, just the same. I'd call Shirlene and ask them about that, as I'm sure they would take care of you on getting a proper needle in your stove. They are great folks, in all respects!

I think I've solved my jetting conundrum. Thanks for all of your help and and thanks to dspearsy2k for the indispensable jet data. Its now clear that #2509 is the correct jet. However, there is more than one type of the #2509 jet. I have reamed a spare jet to the M jet .013 inches. Installed it, and now I have a very well bahaved clean burning 111T. I now have a great running 111T with what I know are the corect parts. Thanks.

    Rick

Oh by the way. I had a spare cleaning needle. It does nothing for the way it burns, but a clean jet on the fly is nice feture.

Great news. A & H should have put a cleaning needle in the stove. I would give her a shout like Mike said.

Basecamp has the part you need though
