Hey Spudz, what a nice day out ! You could do with getting some of these Cumberland sausages in a coil they would fit the Optimus 91 pan a treat !

    What's the next burn-up weekend stove ?

It would need to be another common stove, something like a 210 type?

Sounds good Rik - if the weekend selected was the same as Sykeside ( 24th - 26th November ) we could see how many stoves of the same type we could light in one place at the same time !

    What a brilliant suggestion!

The fantastic Primus 210 would be a great stove for the next photo-shoot - though it might be a good idea to include the Optimus 00 at the same time.

Well, I've GOT an 00, so its good for me! Perhaps widen out the selection to 96's etc.
    Small backpack types. :D
    Then we could do-
    45's,
    111's
    71/80's
    400's
    500's
    alkies
    gassers
    The list is endless... :D

I didn't have a 123 at the start of this but Ian kindly fettled an Army No. 7 and sent it up for me - it's got the 123 burner at least. I fired it up for the first time this afternoon. However, in the excitement of it all, I forgot to take any pictures! but it did boil some water very quickly. This is now...

    and a close-up:-

I left it to settle down for 10 minutes and it now burns like a champ!

If this appears on it's side and far too large - sorry!

Thanks, Ian. Neat little thing... :D

(More of this afternoon's exploits in a moment...)

    For the Brits...
Is Panel Wipe the cause of that beautiful purple flame? 8)
Coleman gas doesn't do that. :?

Trevor came round this afternoon and promptly presented me with this:-

    DSCN0486.jpg
Yowzah! - thanks very much, Trevor. :D

At this point we removed my grubby 123R, quickly replaced it with Trevor's pristine 123 and took another image. We were hoping to convince you that I'd polished it up and wondered how long it would take someone to notice that a 123R had transmogrified into a 123. But a technical hitch spoiled our little game - bummer! But see below...

    Anyway, who mentioned sausages?
    DSCN0488.jpg
Trevor's 123 boils water whilst mine does a bit of frying.

    Statler and Waldorf:-

When Trevor went, I dismantled the stove, dunked the brass parts in vinegar and polished off the sausages. Then I polished off the stove. A short while later - TA-DA! :-

    Assembled:-

    Burns very well:-

...and some cherry-red for the perpetrator of all this malarkey:-
    DSCN0504.jpg

I got some very interesting flame effects when I boiled some water. Looking at the image I can now see why...
    DSCN0507.jpg

I think this is a bit more like what SVEA had in mind...

    Good stove - I like it... \:D/

I decided to tackle this weekend's stove photo session by making some cinnamon rolls over the SVEA 123.

Wasn't sure how many stoves it would take to maintain 350 F in a Coleman oven with the air temperature at about 17 F. Started out with three, but the temp was consistently over 450 F.

    |imgRemoved|

So I took one stove away and was able to get the temperature settled around 350 F after fiddling with them a bit.

30 minutes later, out pops the results:

Of course, you can't have cinnamon rolls without coffee. Fired up a 123, place a Vesubio on top and brewed up mason jar of nice black coffee.

    And the final results!

And for those with broadband, the comforting roar of 2 SVEA 123's heating the Coleman oven.

Yes, they were homemade, but with two growing boys around, these won't last long. At this time, only half are left.

Hey well done Trev David and Andy =D> =D> =D>

Nice job on cleaning up that one from Trevor, David, I assume he found it on the way there as it obviously wasn't his due to the lack of phenomenal shine ;)

Great work with the Oven Andy, never seen a Svea 369 before !

This thread has it all, shiny brass stoves, happy children, and pastry and coffee, very cool indeed.

    Greetings, Friends,

Well, my plan for last night actually came to pass!! So, here are my SVEA 123(R) action photos!!

I went out into the forest on the ridge behind our home, and found a nice, little flat spot in one of the game trails. It also had a relatively flat stump right next to it, which said, "Hey, use me for your cooking, and kitchen"! So, that's where I setup camp. Here's a photo of my setup.

    DSCN2710.jpg

Here's a shot from the rear of my camp, which shows the stump and my stoves and cooking goodies. The spot was "just" wide enough to setup my very small tent. I usually tuck in my ground cloth, but as this camp was one of the "quick-down-and-dirty" variety, and there was no chance of rain last night, I took the easy way out and left it as it lay.

    DSCN2711.jpg

Here are some of my SVEA's in action. I have the Trangia tea kettle boiling on a 123, and another 123 cooks up my bacon. The third 123 will cook my eggs, when I'm ready, and a 123R is fired up, too, "just because"!! ;) 8) Note the wet spot on the stump. In all my years of using SVEA stoves, I've NEVER tipped food or drink off of one... until this morning!!!!      The stump is not completely level, and my tea kettle slid off it's SVEA and spilled it's hot water all over the stump!! No problem, though. I refilled the kettle, rearranged the stove, and had tea water boiling in no time!! ;) 8)

    DSCN2707.jpg

Even though this spot was very close to the house, I do NOT go out into the forest without protection! We have bears, mountain lions, coyotes, and plenty other critters that might be attracted to my small camp, and also to the smell of frying bacon!!! Last night, late, when I crawled into my sleeping bag, I had my Colt Lightweight Officer's .45 ACP with me, and a trusted friend it's been for all the years I've owned it, too!!! Great shooting little pistol, and plenty of "OOOMMMPHH", when needed!

    DSCN2712.jpg

Hey, breakfast is READY, and I'm ready to chow down on some extra thick bacon, eggs, and a nice hot cup of Earl Grey! Yeah, I know..... some consider it a "junk tea", but I love it, and will continue to do so!! No morning is complete without my two cups of Earl Grey!!!

    DSCN2716.jpg

Here's a closer shot of my small shelter. It's an A-16 Bug Bivy and Fly, and it was made and marketed many years ago, by Adventure 16, down in San Diego. It's quite small, barely room to sit up. But, it's also very lightweight, keeps the rain and bugs out, and rolls into two small packages the size of pie plates!! I used to take this shelter when I went solo deer hunting, and also for solo journeys when I wanted less weight on my back and was willing to sacrifice some room. Great little setup!!!

    DSCN2717.jpg

Last, here's a photo past my camp and cook stump, up the forested ridge. This spot is very close to our home, and it's a blessing and an extreme pleasure to live so close to the wilderness!!!! Living here would not be for everyone. But, for those hardy souls that are truly self-sufficient, and don't mind the extra work that living in the mountains entails, it's absolutely heaven on earth!!!

    DSCN2718.jpg

So, that was my SVEA 123(R) adventure, and though short, it was very sweet and a grand time!! Thanks for visiting my camp, and God Bless!

    Every Good Wish,
    Doc Mark
