Alexx, your on a roll, good visit on Friday. Stan, I was talking about a day gathering. The PNW gathering is March 5/6 so hope your not over that weekend. We used Derby Reach a few years ago, lots of covered shelters and close. BTW got 1 of Solus burning today Jan
@Jan...Apparently I'm not rolling very well, yet. Okay...fired up the 1940 500 this morning. Simple task was to boil the kettle for Tim Horton's hot chocolate. It's a Canadian thing...eh!!! lol Ahhhh...problem being that after the stove was burning maybe 2-3 minutes some sections of the stacked burner plates start glowing red. It definitely burns hotter than the other 500. Not liking this turn of events much I turned it off and it had a little backfire into the manifold. I know that isn't good. Took the generator off...took it all apart...everything seems to function as intended. Now I know these things wear out but what actually wears out? Maybe I am oversimplifying it but doesn't seem to be much to them. I ran out of time today but was going to pop that new generator from the 38 onto the 40 and see if that fixes the problem. I am suspecting it will but you never know right? I'm not scared to ask questions it's the only way you can learn. Any of you Professionals out there have any insight into this problem that might steer me in the right direction? Other thing I noticed was that the 40 burner stack of plates seems to be a little higher than the 38. I never counted them because this was the way that they came. The dimple top plate was different on each stove as well so I asked a couple guys and sorted that out. I was thinking that maybe that was the problem...but no. Thanks in advance to anyone who responds.
Alex, I think there are 7 plates starting with the smooth 1 on the bottom, then corogated, smooth etc. Also do not tighten the top plate down too tight, just barely snug. Damm, guess I had better get out the Solus Jan
Okay...BACK ON A ROLL HERE!!! You aren't going to believe what I found out. Okay...maybe some of you will. I wouldn't call it a screw up on my part. It's only a screw up if you can't rationalize and work yourself out of it. At least that's my story and I'm sticking to it. Very interesting and I never would of thought this would make all the difference. Swapped generators with the '38. The new generator from the '38 made no difference. The old generator from the hot running '40 worked perfectly in the '38. Hmmmm...it's head scratching time. Okay maybe there's something wrong with the fuel pickup light/burn air adjustment part? Can't remember what that whole assembly is called so forgive me. Took that out...seems to function as intended. Took the '38 apart and looked at both together they seemed to look the same...function the same. Blew it out with air. Inserted the one from the '40 into the '38...put that one back together. It started up and burned perfectly. Put the one from the '38 into the '40 and put that stove back together and lit it up. After a minute burner plates started to glow red shut her down and it backfired into the manifold. Hmmmm...more head scratching. Okay...maybe the '40 manifold is cracked or something? Stove apart again. Looked at it real good. Looks good. The only thing that has bothered me was that the stack of burner plates seems to be just a hair taller on the '40 when I visually checked the stoves side by side. I noticed this yesterday and asked about dimple positioning and the number of plates. Both stoves have the same number of plates and I have stacked them in order as well as made sure the top dimpled plate was positioned correctly. Okay...why is the '40 stack taller? Swapped the stack from the '38 into the '40 and the '40 still burnt hot. Put the '40 stack in the '38 and it burned perfectly. I was grasping at straws now. Hmmmm...more head scratching. Now...I've done nearly everything. WTF? Comparing the manifolds side by side with the burner plates stacked and screwed down snug...Why does that one...the '40...look a 1/16 of an inch or so higher?? Touched it with a screwdriver....and the plates moved. I snugged those screws down right? Put the screwdriver to it. It is snug...plates still move when gently nudged with screwdriver. Okay...take screws out. I know I changed the screws...the originals were beyond saving. I also ran a tap all the way through the screw holes...right...?? Or did I...?? Maybe just bottomed the tap out?? Hmmmmm...Looked at the manifold...holes go right through... HOWEVER...light bulb goes on in head here people. lol Threads are tapped all the way except for the last 1/8". Took an original screw out of the '38 and compared it to my replacement screw from the '40. Ones on the '40 were about 1/16" longer. This shouldn't of made a difference to my original thinking that looking at the manifold I assumed that the threads went all the way through. It was the only thing I changed. Made the screws the same length as the originals and snugged the burner plates down...and guess what??? The '40 burns as nice as the '38. I guess that extra 1/16 inch bottomed the screws out making me thing that the plates were snug...snug enough that they wouldn't readily move yet they were loose enough to somehow affect the air/fuel ratio and cause the plates to glow red hot after only a minute or so running. I don't know the science behind it but that was that. Moral of the story. Don't ever assume anything. A simple screw can screw you up. What's next??
@MrAlexxx that is quite a story. Congratulations on figuring it out. Sometimes persistence pays off. Ben
Thanks Ben. It was nice to have an "extra" excellent running stove to compare and swap parts with. That made things easier. Also...it was running good...albeit...only for a couple minutes before I took it apart to weld up that wonky backing plate. Here is a pic of what it was doing in about a minute of burn time. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to know this ain't right. lol As far as what's next? Stepson phoned me last night and asked me if I wanted another stove. Some guy he works with has one in pieces that he started and gave up on. I asked him what it was and he said a Coleman and it was shiny chrome. Sounds like another 500? Seems to be my lot in life!!! Be awhile before I get it he said he'd bring it next time he passes through my location. Sometimes he does what he says other times he doesn't. I may get it I may not. There must of been a good Coleman salesman in my neck of the woods seems to be a lot of 500's around here.
Hi Ben? I joined the site yesterday due to initially googling two tigers picnic stove while trying to find out more about a recent acquisition. I was pointed in your direction. Can you help please? I posted photos on this thread. Cheers. Rio
@z1ulike, hi Ben, I started a thread concerning a two tigers picnic stove I have. I'm trying to find out if anyone knows anything about it. There are a couple of pictures on the thread. Many thanks. Rio
