A Survey of the State of the Art of Upright Canister Stoves

Morning, Ladies and Gents,

Most of you know that I'm not a huge fan of the JetBoil stuff. I have one, but have found it wanting, in too many areas to want to use it. I have quite a few other Gassie stoves, too, and like several of them. The Markill is good, as is the Crux, and several other little stoves like that. The Super Fly is a great stove for cooking, as are the larger Camping Gaz stove, but I tend not to use them anymore. I have a Pocket Rocket, but it's too much of a "one note Samba" for me to do anything with it. I have the Micro Rocket, and the newer PR2, which I will try at next week's CASG event. But, my favorite of the bunch is the MSR Reactor! It's proved itself to me, time, and time again, and we can actually cook on it, if we are careful. It blows the doors off of any other Gassie that I currently own, as for wind performance, and we love and trust that stove. In fact, we bought another one, so we now have two, one with smaller pot, and one with larger pot. I have a Windboiler, and whilst it's a good little stove, it doesn't compare favorably to the Reactor in any way, other than smaller size, and much less power. I'd take it over a JetBoil, any day, however, but the Reactor is our "go-to" Gassie, and for all the reasons I mentioned.

Having said that, I'd love to try the Soto Amicus, if I could find one easier. It's too bad that REI doesn't stock the Soto stuff anymore, because I still have a $50 gift certificate, from Christmas, and I'd gladly pop it onto the little Soto, if t'were possible. The other Soto "little guy", the Micro Regulator, I think it was called, is also a good little stove. In the end, Gassies have certainly come a long way, since the Bleuet was first announced!! There seems to be "something for everyone", and that is a very good thing!!

I'll try to remember to bring my Soto Amicus. It's just a little upright canister stove, but for that class of stoves, I think it's a nice one. I also have a Micro Regulator and a WindMaster. I have both sets of pot supports for the WindMaster. It's a rather interesting set up.

It's interesting to me to see people who like the SuperFly. It's pointy pot supports are the worst idea ever! It poked a hole in the side of my pack! They need to be rounded. And for backpacking, it's rather large and kludgey to me compared to what else is out there. It does make a dandy platform for a fairly lightweight Frankenstove, the Super Gnat.

Well Jim, you talked me into it!! I sussed around on the 'net this morning, for a Soto Amicus stove, and found that Campsaver has a deal going right now for that stove, with and without ignition, and with and without and Soto cook pot!! For a limited time, their regular discounted price is a further 25% off!! So, I pulled the trigger on an Amicus, with "Stealth ingition:, and the Soto cookpot, for just $47.97, plus shipping! I thought that was a very good deal, and look forward to receiving my new Soto Amicus, with it's igniter, and pot! Yeah, I have a ton of little pots, but hey, this one has "Soto" printed on the side of it....!! And, in truth, keeping pot and stove together, will help me find that combo much easier, instead of having to sift through myriad small pots to find what I want!
