On several sites, I see people bashing Chinese stoves that don't have safety valves. I don't see similar criticisms of stoves made elsewhere. Are safety valves really necessary? I saw a valve blow many years ago. Someone had put three Svea 123R stoves in a cluster, turned them up to full power, surrounded them with rocks, and put a large kettle on top. At least one stove blew a valve. I suspect it would have run out of fuel if the valve hadn't blown. Stoves this hot tend to squirt fuel pretty fast. I have never seen a valve blow when the stove was used properly. Are we risking our lives when we use a stove without a safety valve? I have several and they don't get very hot when I use them.
One prepares for emergencies even though they are very rare and you may never encounter those you've prepared for. Similar situation with such 'safety valves' I think.
We are talking about over-pressure release valves right? If so, do Coleman stoves have "safety" valves? (edit: rhetorical question)
Depends on the stove. Ive seen pictures of 123 style stoves with the bottom blown out but the held at that point I have seen a primus 70 style stove blow and it wasnt pretty and and I know the radius 42 in my possession did open the safety once. Previous owner was simmering under a big pot and a small flame appeared which grew over 10 seconds or so to about a meter long. These are all brass stoves. My take is that brass is weaker than steel so the need may only exist for brass stoves. The coleman style stoves are probably pumped to a pressure higher than the safety can handle just to work and at that pressure the fuel would have to get extremely hot to make a difference. I mean if the tanks that hot its no longer the biggest issue
Because every Coleman fount is pressure tested to a really high PSI. "A healthy fount is designed to handle several hundred psi pressure before rupturing. I don't remember the actual number that was given to me by the Coleman people during the tour last year but it was a large factor of safety over the 30-60psi operating pressure of the standard lantern."
Coleman founts are pumped. Less governed by environmental heat. Self pressurizing founts are mostly governed by the heat environment that the stove is used in.
