Barthel Bunsen Burner 'Korall'

    Hi all,

    I have now been Furloughed from work for a month due to the COVID 19 outbreak, so now have plenty of time on my hands to Fettle!

    Making slow progress with the G. Barthel 'Korall' burner. But very happy with progress so far.



    Sorted leaking NRV with PTF tape as short term fix until correct size lead washer is sourced/found.

    Got the idea from this site after someone else posted their attempt at fixing a difficult NRV. Just proves what a wealth of information and help CCS is!

    NRV is now is working well.

    Trying to source a pump cup so in the meantime I cut a pump cup/blank from a rubber/neoprene type sheet which is manufactured to resist fuels. Pump now fully operational.



    Used same fuel resistant rubber/neoprene sheet to make seal for fuel filler cap. Old one was made of cork and leaked air

    Pressured the tank and achieved 45psi (according to very old gauge) no problem!!!



    Held 45psi for a couple of minutes and then very slowly lost pressure over 10 minutes down to 35psi.

    Traced the leak to an old fibre washer seal around pump housing.




    Trying to source a replacement which I am hoping Fettlebox may be able to assist with. 29mm inner diameter. 35mm outer diameter.


    Other than that I now just need to source the correct size of jet and parts from Fettlebox and I should be able to get her running!

    If anyone has any advice on appropriate size of jet to try, or any tips on sourcing gasket/fibre washer for pump body I would be grateful?

    Jet thread diameter is 5mm.

    Hi @Brassmonkey , I have no direct experience of laboratory burners fuelled with kerosene....

    However, the majority of domestic stoves, (and smaller blowlamps) use a jet aperture of 0.32mm diameter. If bigger burners are used the aperture might be increased to 0.45 mm diameter and so on.
    Lower power stoves and blowlamps might use 0.23mm diameter jet apertures ( which represents a halving of cross-sectional area relative to the more common 0,32mm diam. aperture.

    I have checked the available information on the Barthel Korall laboratory burner and can see that the jet is part no.579, which uses a #5306 jet pricker. Unfortunately I cannot find another stove or burner which would allow cross referencing.

    If this was my burner I would start with a 0.32 mm diam jet aperture. I am pretty sure I would get an acceptable flame, and if I felt more power was needed, use a micro-drill to open out the aperture. If the output proved two high, there are posts on this site on the clever use of SS hyprodemic needles being utilised to reduce jet apertures.

    Yet again I am in your dept!

    I will try to source a 0.32mm jet as the burner is the silent type with cap, and up rate if required. Do you know where I might try? I have sent a request to Fettlebox and hope he may be able to help.

    I do have a 0.63mm jet that fits. It came as part of a conversion kit to Butane for a new Gas cooker that runs on main grid gas in the UK. It fits the thread but also leaks fuel. I am trying to source graphite tape or similar from Fettlebox to sort this.
