This was sitting in a bucket of rusty old stuff... It's clearly an old, and from what I can determine from the reference gallery, a rare steel Svea pan ring! It should clean up nicely after a bit of electrolysis. Now I need to find a matching Svea stove
Since it's cast iron would you still put it in an electrolysis bath? Would it be better to clean the surface rust off with steel wool and a wire brush and then "season" it as you would with cast iron cookware? Maybe coat it with oil and heat it to 200F for an hour.
Electrolysis doesn't work on iron? I was getting all worked up to try it I had planned on seasoning it like a pan though, but I still need to find an old stove for it, so it's low priority. But this post seems to be another dumb set of questions. I've had a rough start on this forum while learning about stoves.
Mark, I didn't say it wouldn't work. I'm asking if it's the best way to derust it because I don't know either.
Mark, Whatever you treat the rust with, as soon as you use the trivit again, it will go back to a rusty finish. The only way to keep that old cast-iron trivet looking good is to use it all the time, or relegate it to a display item and paint it with Hammerite. If you have one without any cracks, that is very unusual! Nice pan-rings; I like em Steve.
Electrolysis works very well on cast iron, I use it often on skillets. you must coat it quickly with something or flash rust will start...Fast! You can season it like cast iron skillets, and use it. If you paint it, it becomes a nice wallhanger.
Can't it just be seasoned like a frying pan? That's my sense. I load it up with beef drippings and put in on the grill for a hour.
These came in two sizes.I have one 16cm(6.25) inches. I need the 21 cm (8.25inchs)ring for my Svea #9
[color:blue][/color]Or just wire brush it and coat it with cast iron stove polish. 11-07-10 04:04 PM - Post#164474 Search for this post.
MarkinLondon I bought a Svea and a Primus together recently but I don't think I want either of them to be honest. They both have bits missing. The Svea is a big old beast number 2. It looks as though the legs and filler have been soldered at some point. If you want it let me know. The pump works and it seems to hold pressure.
MarkinLondon, looks like the cheapest post option is £8.00. If you want to send me £10.00 for my troubles it's yours. Bearing in mind that it's a non runner and will need parts. Let me know if you want it.
You could try painting it with a high temperature engine or stove paint. I use 'Halfords VHT Engine Enamel Paint' ( Link ), which I used recently on this lamp - Link . Terry
