I thought I'd share a couple of pics with you.
I aquired an unused optimus 3 stove!

In the pictures you see a fuel bottle, this is a 1 liter bottle of 'lampolie' It gives some reference of the size of the stove

The heats-spreader thingie is still coper colored!

Here goes... alcohol in the cup

And here is it is burning... hardly visible in daylight!

I can see it burning under the heatspreader.

All of the copper colored paint on the burner head is gone... its not new anymore :(

Ok, for the pics I lit it again a bit later

I think I still did something wrong though.. The heat output is very disappointing. According to the manual it should be able to boil a gallon of water in 6~8 minutes, but it takes at least that time to boil 1/4th of that amount. Maybe I am not using the correct fuel, or something....
And it leaks a tiny bit underneath the priming cup.. but that won't be much trouble to fix

    Nice stove J W !

Remember Confucius say " he who believes stove manufacturers claims for boil times also believes that the moon is made of dairy produce " ;)

Did you give it enough of a pumping ? A big mother like that will take a lot of pressurizing.

Any further problems just send it over here foir confirmatory testing ;) :D

    Lovely looking stove!!
Try nipping up the burner a tad to stop the leak.Guess 3/4 af spanner. easy to reck thread in brass. Be cafefull.
You may be up for a new washer.
Take out the pump washer to nearly out and put a drop or two of olive oil on it.
You should be able to crank it up a bit more than that.
    Do a compression test.
Put finger over nipple hole and pump up hard.
Emerse stove in bucket if it will fit or put some detergent in water and brush around. Bubbles will indicate leaks.
Check the cap seal if its soft and plyable.
Appanrently new stoves old stock can dry out all of these things over time.

Should hold pressure for a long time after pumping up. Big flame!! if not leak some where.

THE gurus will be along soon.

I put in an extra washer under the cup (it seemed to be still a copper on copper connection before) and greased up the pump a bit more

It sounds like a jet engine, looks like one too... still 5minute45seconds for 1L :(

Next time I'll try a bigger pot/kettle... this one seems a bit small for the size of the flame...

That's about ?60, I reckon. Then add the postage to the UK and packing - :-k maybe not...

I see they've nicked our illustration of the chappy using the stove - or did we nick their illustration? When I first bought something from Ross and before I went to his house to collect it, I thought that was him!

Boy, was I disappointed... ;)

I think everyone nicked it from this catalog ... but who scanned it originally ?
If I remember correctly, Ross has already 'commented' on the use of his scans by this store owner. Have a look at this page on the site

Price for the #3 is a bit steep, but a 123 for 59,50 yo-yos is not too bad :? !
nudge nudge !! Go on David, you know you want one. ;) ;)

Was reading about fuel on another site spiritburner sister site.
Lampolite fuel is more refined less smelly stuff than kero but burns cooler.
I would try some good old kero and see if your burn times comes down a bit more.
4-4.5 min probably pull you up.
The claims I think are stated in a lab conditions. No wind. chemical grade fuel. Windscreens
perfectly suited to pot. Big wide pot windscreen optimum distace away for pot and super tight lid. ALuminium pot with blach absorbing paint and mirror polished reflector. temp 25 degrees C oxynated pureified water or with heat absorbing minerals humidity 65% or optimum for 02 transfer to fuel vapour all that sort of shit.Or something like that anyway.
Real world stuff is bit different though.
I think 4-5 min aint bad. But others may disagree.
If you don't like it sent it to me!!!!
Might make a good mudcrab boiler stove.
    Big do water boiler.
    Cooking elelphants etc.

    ;)

Buggared if I know I was looking up Alcohol stoves and got into the Zen stoves and got into the fuel list of stuff with kero/petrol/avaiation fuel stuff down the bottom or a blue colored link. Sorry
.The one with about 4 or five noisey petrol burning gsxk and stuff in it says the plastic pumps are good cos they weigh less.
Don't give a monkeys!! Iif you have to fix them every time you want to use it or have to carry around shit loads of spare stuff to keeep them working who wants one!!!
