Well, actually. :-$ The road IS open to Islip Saddle. The Pacific Crest Trail goes from Islip Saddle to Buckhorn. Pretty easy day's walk if you don't mind backpacking in.

How would I backpack in my kitchen sink and enough stoves, heaters and lanterns to make it fun?

Jim: Maybe rent a helicopter to have the necessary supplies delivered to your destination? Or air drop perhaps. Mike...

Hmmm, yeah, I see my 20# propane can plus many 1 pounders and 5 gallons of kero and 2 or 3 gallons of Coleman being airdropped. Seems like a scene from Apocalypse Now, "I love the smell of Napalm in the morning..." The rangers would love it.

For this campground I was looking forward to some serious car camping. Not gonna happen until at least next spring from the sounds of it.

It's really more a matter of learning how to pack properly.

I know a few bushcrafters who carry that volume of kit for those dangerous bush camps, about 100metres from their car down in the home counties

They are the only ones who will amazingly survive the nuclear spill or the next manufactured deadly virus that escapes from a lab. They know they are the chosen ones and they need to be prepared for Waitrose to one day not be open
