You all have a good time at CASG2 and don't forget to take some pictures for us to see.

The best answer I can give is probably early afternoon. It's about a 5 hour run for me, and I have to run the LA gauntlet...
Plus (or Minus) I have to work the night before, don't get home till midnite.
Save a large spot for me!
My popup is ~ 15 ft long. :(

I don't know where everyone is coming from, but maybe the below map link will be helpful. You'll need to zoom in and scroll around a bit.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=34.25977,-118.316059&daddr=Big+Tujunga+Canyon+Rd+to:Angeles+Crest+Hwy%2FCA-2%2FForest+Hwy+Route+FH61+to:Sierra+Hwy+to:Angeles+Crest+Hwy%2FCA-2%2FForest+Hwy+Route+FH61+to:Angeles+Crest+Hwy%2FCA-2+to:CA-2&hl=en&geocode=%3BFcBuCwIdyoXz-A%3BFVYODAIdN8L4-A%3BFeWcDgIdGs31-A%3BFVMKDAIdgMv3-A%3BFQRIDAIdmCH9-A%3BFVbzCQIdWmj0-A&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=0&sz=14&via=1,4&sll=34.258919,-118.295116&sspn=0.054198,0.108833&ie=UTF8&ll=34.296934,-118.002777&spn=0.866765,1.220856&t=p&z=10]Google Map Link Here

On the map, point "B" is Buckhorn.

There are four entry points to the Angeles National Forest that will get you to Buckhorn:
A - Oro Vista St. in Sunland
C - Angeles Forest Highway near Palmdale.
D - Angeles Crest Highway (SR-2) in Wrightwood.
E - Angeles Crest Highway (SR-2) in La Canada.

If you're coming from the East, NE, or ESE, option "D" would be a good one (this is the way Doc goes).

If from the NNW (and perhaps NW in general), "C".

If from the S or SSE, then it's your choice which would be better between "D" and "E".

If from the W or SW, generally you'd want to go with "E". "A" is an alternate route to "E".

I was going to warn everyone off of route "D" from Wrightwood, but I checked and I see they finally re-opened it. It's been closed for the past five years due to a rockslide, but I guess they re-opened in May. It's too bad, in a way -- I'll miss the peace and quiet!

I'll be coming via "E" as well. Sometime Friday morning.

Steve, I think if you come by "C", you could miss all that LA traffic...

It would take us longer to get to Palmdale than to just go the 101 route... we're coming via Santa Barbara.

Baja: I think Arch had it right: Turn off the 101 at Ventura on the 126 go through Fillmore to the 5 at Magic Mountain, then go through Santa Clarita/ Canyon Country to the 14 then catch Angeles Crest Highway either from Acton or Pearblossom through Valyermo off the 138. ( I think Pearblossom/Valyermo route would be faster then the "E" route through Acton/ Palmdale. We have family in Santa Barbra and use that route several times a year. A whole lot faster than taking the 101 through L.A. ( It's route "D" for us) Mike...

Actually, from the junction of 126 and 5, I'd cut the corner by taking Valencia Blvd/Soledad Canyon Rd to the 14.

Baja, if you're coming via Santa Barbara, you might consider the http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Santa+Barbara,+CA&daddr=34.266296,-119.061584+to:Angeles+Crest+Hwy%2FCA-2%2FForest+Hwy+Route+FH61&hl=en&geocode=%3B%3BFVUODAId48X4-A&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=1&sz=9&via=1&sll=34.28061,-118.8109&sspn=1.733854,2.441711&ie=UTF8&t=p&z=9]118 route. It's actually slightly shorter than the 101 route (according to Google). You take the 210 for part of the route which is generally pretty good w.r.t. traffic. Avoid the 118 from Simi Valley on in during rush hour though. It's a commuter route.

The 118 route (or some variant) is the route I take any time I'm heading up to Ventura, Oxnard, or points north.

Arch. That is what I meant, wasn't sure of the street name, off the freeway I think we take Magic Mountain Parkway. I have done it so many times I have forgotten the street names. Mike...

Jim's 118 route would ok at 2:00 AM but I would rather take the 126 route, no traffic.

Hey Doc Mark...

This sure looks like fun but I'm in the Northern California / San Francisco Bay Area and it doesn't look like I can escape to SoCal that weekend. I'm actually going camping at Samuel P. Taylor State Park in Marin Co. Sept. 11-13 so I will get my outdoor time taken care of if the Governator is nice and keeps the State Parks open for a while. If he closes the SP's I'm planning on pitching my tent on the California State Capital lawn in Sacramento! look for me in the news if that happens...

I also saw you posted about a Rando CV360 a few years back that I have cartridges for and that you also have a Prentiss Wabers 8B stove. I picked one up recently too but have to clean and restore it at some point. I have to getr some pics online of that at some point.

How many CCS members are in the Northern California area? We should think about a NorCal version of this at some point.

Hi, JWD,

Good to hear from you! Your camping on the Capital lawn sounds like a fine idea!! Be sure to take along your most noisy stove, so you can keep Arnold awake, and thereby, better make your point!! ;)

Yep, I have two Rando CV360's, and a case of cartridges, thanks for a good friend in the Denver area! Great little stove. That old Prentiss-Wabers stove is only missing it's fuel cap, and when I find one of those, it should fire up, just fine. Neat old stove, too. Glad you have one, as well. I'll post photos of mine, "one of these days", when time permits. ;) 8-[

Our very first CA Stove Gathering was held up your way, just South of Morro Bay, at Montana De Oro Campground. Three of us CCS members showed up, and between us, we have tons of great stoves to enjoy!! The food was outstanding, the company was just good, and our stoves were the hit of the entire campground, with the Rangers sending all campers over to our campsite for a "stove show and tell" day!!! So, we've having Gathering #2 down South, closer to a good many of our Stovies in CA. Bajabum is from up your way, too, in Lompoc, but is making the drive down to join us. Hope you can come, too, one of these days. We have a few other Stovies up North, and a few in Oregon, as well. With the distances involved, I don't see us having any large Gathering, without most of us having to do some driving. The "Wide Open Spaces".....  8) :D :D

Have a great campout, and I'll look forward to reading a report, after the action! Take care, and God Bless!

Every Good Wish,
Doc (who was just up in Chico, North of you, doing my 18th century medical presentation at the Stansbury Home. NO time to hunt for stoves, unfortunately, as it was about a 1,200 mile round-trip drive!)

Hey, Jim,

I might. Can you post a photo, and I'll check to see what I've got. Take care, and God Bless!

Hi all: Am I to assume that those of us attending are to bring all our stoves and have them all fettled and running? I'm ok with that. Mike...

Mike,
All our stoves might be a big order. Doc Mark would need a semitruck and a couple of days of packing/unpacking to get all of his stoves to Buckhorn. (In the process, he might find several he's forgotten he has  .)

I say: bring some of your more interesting stoves (include at least one you feel comfortable cooking on). Also, in past meets one of the activities has been fettling, so don't feel they all need to be working.

Hey, Flivver,

Arch is right, no need to bring "all" of them!! As he says, I might have a small problem doing that, and would have to rent some sort of large truck to get them all there, in any case!! He's also right that I just might find a few that I'd forgotten I even owned!! ;) 8)  Hey, it's happened before.... :D :D

I'm going to bring a selection of stoves that I think might be interesting to those that can attend the Gathering. I'll probably not bring as many as I did for our first Gathering, as that was a ton of stoves!! But, I'll being "enough"! ;) :D I also plan to bring some that need work, plus tools, parts, and other stuff, to see if I can get them working. It might be fun if others did the same, as Arch suggested.

I don't think that the current fire above Azusa should be a problem for us, as they should have that out in a day, or so. This is our fire season, however, and if, at the last moment, something comes up, I know of a few alternate sites that can probably accomodate us, even though some of them are not the most scenic in the world. (Think more desert, and less mountains) But, hey, we'll make it work, and with the Grace of God, it should turn out just fine. Take care, and God Bless!

Every Good Wish,
Doc

Wow, would that ever be a score. I only have one photo of the canister that I got off the internet. I apologize for it's poor quality:

CamPak_Stove.jpg
It looks something like the orginal canisters for an MSR rapid fire, but it does not have the standard lindal valve. The threads look compatible with a modern lindal valve, but it appears to lack the part that would press down on the seal when the canister is screwed in and release gas into the burner.

Here is a link to all the photos I have of a Campak Cookette butane stove.

UPDATE ON OUR GATHERING:

Greetings, All,

AFter checking out the fire perimeter map that Baja posted in another thread, I see that our upcoming Gathering at Buckhorn Campground may well be seriously impacted by our most recent fires!! This is bad news, but far less dire than the news for those actually living in the fire danger areas. I'll keep a weather eye on this fire situation, and if we end up having to cancel our Gathering, then we'll have to make the best of it. Or, who is up for a last minute shift in Gathering location? Anyone? I'll go for it, if others are willing, and if it looks like that might be the best course of action, I'll check out a few local campgrounds on our side of the Cajon Pass. Talk to you all soon, and God Bless!

Every Good Wish,
Doc
