Thanks gents, appreciate it. @ArchMc I got that kettle off the bay for a very reasonable price. I got another as well, that the seller said was vintage, but I think it's newer, made to look old. It's okay though, I got it for just a few bucks.
We’ve all heard it “ nice photos, you must have a really good camera”. It’s the guy behind the camera that matters. Nice photos ! @The Warrior
In Lockdown, in London.... just horrible here today. @The Warrior Your pictures are great, it was just like being there. What a fantastic thing to have a little cabin in the woods. You have lifted my spirits no end today with that little trip out to the woods! Thanks!
Morning @The Warrior , Great report and wonderful photos! Thanks for sharing them with us! That little Sony takes some very nice photos. If it ain't broke.... don't try to fix it!! Did you have any problem with the 'skeeters? How about Chiggers? DANG, I hate those things!! And, I didn't see any mention of snakes. I'd have guessed you'd have seen some Copperheads, or Rattlesnakes. Do you have Fire Ants, up by your cabin? Neat rainwater catch tank! That's a very good idea. I've never tried Maker's Mark, but might have to give it a go. How big is that Ball jar drinking vessel you showed? Looks like a pretty big shot of Bourbon!! Or, was that just the camera angle? Thanks, again, for posting such a fine thread, Good Sir! Sweet Bride and I loved your little cabin in the woods!! Take care, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc
I can attest the fine quality of the Maker's Mark, Mark! @Doc Mark . Bought a bottle years ago but still remember I liked it much, will have to buy another one... Loved your report a lot,@The Warrior , lovely little hide away in the woods, what's not to like about it?
Nice post, great cabin. I like the water system. How much property do you have? Speaking for myself, feel free to show some of your knives in the photos. I think there is a broad overlap between stoves and knives; most people here use and appreciate good knives. Paul
Thanks man, appreciate that very much. I put a lot of time into my photos. Awesome man, glad I could help during these strange times. Here in Illinois, the shut down got extended to another month. I'm one of the lucky ones, that gets to keep working, but starting this month we have to wear masks, and it just kills me. I'm a hard worker, plus I weigh 280 lbs, so it's hard for me to breathe. In Missouri, where my cabin is, the shut down ended today. Maybe I should move there. Believe me, if I were a single man, it would be a no brainer. Thanks man, appreciate it. Hope that ends soon for ya's. Thanks Doc, appreciate it. I've said before, I do manipulate my photos in GIMP, to enhance them a bit. Mostly add a touch of color, as the camera doesn't pick up what the human eye can. Skeeters were not a problem, but the gnats were about to drive me insane. I normally get chiggers every time I go there when it's hot out, whether I spray for them or not. I stopped using spray. I just let them do their thing, and keep my socks on as much as possible. It's the only way I know of to stop the crazy itch. Chiggers drive me nuts. No fire ants. We've seen snakes on occasion. I've seen a few Copperheads, and although I haven't seen any, there are also Timber Rattlers there. Seen a few milk snakes, and a ring tailed snake once. There are also bears in the area, although rare to see. I haven't seen one yet, and the former property owner of 26 years, never saw one either. I think I read once where there's one bear for every 12,000 acres, or something like that. Mountain lion have been spotted there as well, but I think the last time was in the 70's. Bobcat are also present, and I have seen their tracks before. The water tank was already there. It's a 200 gallon tank. I've never had it hooked up. We just take a few of those collapsible 5 gallon tanks with us. There's probably 2 shots worth in the glass, guessing. I drank 3 that night, so 6 shots, and 4 the next night, aka 8 shots. Thanks again for responding, glad you and your wife enjoyed it. Thanks man. Maker's Mark is where it's at. The wife threw a birthday party for her dad one year, and there was one of the big bottles of MM leftover, that we brought home. That was my first time to drink it, and I enjoyed it very much. Been my go to bourbon since. I also like Jameson's Irish whiskey, but haven't drank any since I got sick from it a few years ago. Now THAT's a story, haha... Thanks man. There's 2.63 acres there, mostly on the side of a hill. Got it for a song. My car cost more than that place did. My first year, I believe my property taxes were $36, haha. Not a misprint. Last year they were up to $40.
Ever put up a gamer camera to see what wanders through while you're out? They're surprisingly inexpensive these days, and will run for months on internal power.
One more good thing about the PNWest: basically no bugs. On all the backpacking trips we've been on over the last 13 seasons, we've never even had mosquito problems. Sometimes there are a few, but DEET deals with them all. They are never thick. No midges or other mini-biters. And the only time we've encountered biting flies was once, at a campsite that also had horse facilities. No chiggers, etc. Luckier than the Midwest on the bug score....
I did think about doing that Marc, but mostly to catch people, not animals. I was a little paranoid about the pace when I first got it, but nobody has ever bothered anything. It's always like we leave it. I have seen fox, deer, and armadillo. Hear coyotes all the time. Have seen Bald Eagles many times. It would be kind of cool to see what I could catch on camera.
We do have rattlesnakes on the east side of the Cascade crest; I've posted several pix here over the years of rattlers on the trail and in camp.
Awesome Ed. I hope to see some timber rattlers one of these days. On good terms, of course. Someone once asked me if it scared me that bears are in the area. I said heck no, I can't wait to see one, haha. You live to see stuff like that.
Our only rattler is the Pacific Rattlesnake, a subspecies of the Western Rattlesnake (not to be confused with the Western Diamondback rattlesnake). It's small as rattlesnakes go. Venomous of course, but no recorded deaths for a long time. I've seen black bears in the wild several times. Usually far away. Twice somewhat nearby, which is a bit disconcerting.
I've seen a few bears at Yellowstone, about it for me. I did see a truck dragging a dead bear in New Hampshire once.
@The Warrior Thank you for taking your time to document your cabin and surroundings - and your life. Posts like yours or similar from a lot of the good folks in here is one of the reasons I really appreaciate this forum. Its not just all hardware and flashy stuff, where price and brandnames are more important than what you are really gonna use it for. This forum is for sure so much more - its also a lot about the different persons behind the profiles in here. Our daily lives, children, houses and pets - joys and grief are shared from all over the world in mutual respect for each of us. I have learned a lot, and yet I am still just a bleak apprentice compared to great fettlers and vaults of knowledge and experience like @kerophile, @Spiritburner, @snwcmpr, @presscall, @HONDA, @MrAlexxx, @Twoberth, @Doc Mark @Ed Winskill, @hikerduane @Wim, @z1ulike @Tony Press @redspeedster @gideon, @Staffan Rönn and many more, who also deserves a lot of credit, for always and willingly offering good advice in all aspects of stoves - and sometimes in life as well.
