The piercable canisters are readily available here at the big national chains like REI which can only mean one thing: there is a continued demand for them. Big money machine stores like REI really don't carry specialty or hard to find items. They carry items that move at volume so they can keep the holy "bottom line" looking good. HJ
I didn't know REI had piercable canisters. good to know. I like to think REI and MEC "care" but I have to agree with you. The staff I find is the real weak link. Jeff
Anyone have any luck adapting a standard propane cylinder to the Gaz stoves/lights? If not, I'll have to try this approach to getting my collection running again.
Are you referring to a 1lb propane tank that would be a chore. But if your old CGaz use the pierce type canisters which are kinda rare, you can always order one from ChickenThief as he makes them. With a little knowledge and tools, the conversion will allow you to use lindal type screw on canisters which are still available. Don't know if I'd wish to connect a 1lb propane canister but I know CGaz does have models that connects to larger propane tanks. Ron

Be careful using fuels your stove isn't designed for. I think you'd be better off getting an adapter (as Ron suggests) that will allow your old Camping Gaz stove run off of modern threaded canisters. What kind of stove do you have anyway? If your stove uses the standard 190g piercable canitsters, those canisters are still being manufactured and are widely available in California. If you have a Globetrotter which uses a smaller canister, those smaller piercable canisters are not available and you might want to get an adapter. HJ
I've got two s200 stoves and 2 lamps (one describing itself as a mini-galley). I don't get out backpacking as much as I used to, but living up in the mountains, we go for a week or more sometimes w/o power. The 16oz tanks are just so much easier (and cheaper) to use than just about anything else out there. Raley's used to sell the Primus cartriges for $2.79 20 years ago, but I imagine they''re more now. Granted, the small pierced and screw on tanks are great for backpacking, my back's really not into lugging everything around, especially with the kids and wife along. We tend to stay a bit closer to the campground and van these days. I found a 16oz adapter at Amerigas to use on a weed burner, turning it into a mini-flamethrower. I wonder if I can use the same adapter to connect up to a gaz stove or light?
I do not think so as the propane thread differs from the camping gaz thread. You could try but the usual caveat on the dangers apply.
Well, I found something that would work, but I don't know if I want that big of a tank... Plus, I'd have to cobble up something to put the pan or pot on. That valve is off of an old propane heater I had. Threads work right onto the lamp and stove fitting above the valve.
Interesting They have adapters so you can connect the small 16oz canisters. edit the adapter I have comes with a two foot hose. Jeff
Unfortunately, our member ChickenThief has not been around in over a year as he is the one doing the adapters. Likewise, you will have to do a bit of modification on it. For all that trouble + cost, it would be practical to just get a new model. Ron
I'm sure you're right, I just hate to toss a perfectly good stove. I guess I'll use it til the gas in it runs out then find something that fits into the pots
