Good to see everyone at CASG8 and meet those whom I had not previously met. Now there's been some suggestion that we used LED lanterns. Let me put such idle gossip to rest. This is my old Coleman lantern, manufactured in November of 1945. She shone brightly after just a wee bit of prodding (and some new fuel). Thank you to John for helping me to decipher the date code and thank you to Mike, Terry, and Arch for their assistance in helping her to shine once more. Grateful for another CASG, HJ
Ken, I'm not much of a lampie. I grew up with stoves, but dad never liked lanterns for some reason. I got my first pressure lantern only maybe 3 years ago. I really don't know he nomenclature on this one. One of the guys there told me, but I forgot to write it down. HJ
I thought I was resistant to the lamp bug, I was wrong. I have about 10 now. Either way, yours looks like a nice one, and a keeper. Ken in NC
Interesting - I've never met people who are so stovecentric that lanterns don't even rate a notice! That's a 242C, one of Coleman's finest single mantle lanterns. You guys must be backpackers who don't want to carry any unnecessary weight at all. I'm a generic camper who wouldn't think to show up at a campsite without at least 5 lanterns and 3 stoves. "Lamp" refers to household table lamps, and their aficionados are referred to as "lamp loons" John
Greetings, All, Well, CASG #8 is now in the history books, and it was a wonderful success, by all measures!!! Just got back yesterday, and Sweet Bride and I had the pleasure of hosting Mr. and Mrs. TrojanDog up here at our mountain home last night, and part of today. Terry and his wife just left, for more adventures, before heading home to the UK, and SB and I are already back to work. I took 356 photos at the Gathering, many of which look to have come out great! So, when time permits, I'll be posting a large number of them in the Events Gallery. Right now, we have to burn the work candle, and so the photo posting will have to wait, for a bit. But, I promise to get to it within a week, or two, if not sooner!! We had a fine turn-out, which included, as you already know, a new member of CCS, John! He brought a wonderful selection of outstanding and rare Coleman stoves to share with us, and I took photos of his, as well as most of the other stoves we all put out for display. In addition, I'll have fettling photos aplenty, as well as food photos, and photos of other relaxing happenings by we Stovies, and our patient, happy, and wonderful wives!!! Let us not forget Furry Flivver, who was, as always, a fun addition to our Gathering!! Thanks for your patience in waiting for the bulk of our Gathering photos, and as a teaser, I'll try to post just a few of them tonight, IF I can get some inventory made by then!! All those who attended, are already looking forward to our next Gathering, and the plans are already in the works for the next event!! Hi John: It was good to meet you and your selection of wonderful Coleman's. This group is stove-centric as this is a stove site filled with stovies. The sister site CPL is for lampies, many of us stovies post there. Lamp is a universal term around the globe. Check out older posts of stove gatherings and you may see a lamp (lantern) or two. Thx Doc sounds great I'm looking fwd to it. OleManColeman = stovie centric, guilty as charged. I've had a 200A & 502 since 60's, 70's. I'm replacing my 200A w/a '38 242B, a lantern I do cherish and it goes well w/my '46 530! I'll also keep at least 1 Peak 1 lantern. I like lantern collections, I don't see me going down that road myself. I do have an unexpected new pastime... finding shelves for the variety of more and more stoves !
OOPS! Still learning the culture here...Yes, I left out the word "here" - I meant in (at least parts of) the U.S. we use the term "Lamp Loon" to distinguish a lantern collector from a lamp collector. I usually try to be clear, but since I was replying to a fellow United Statesian I slipped - sorry!
Well, as a matter of fact, when I'm hiking for two, I do try to keep the weight down (I'm carrying about 75 lbs/34 kg in the below photo) Thanks for the ID on the lantern. She's a beauty and will definitely be accompanying me on trips where I don't have to carry everything on my back. Nice to see another person from the OC who likes this sort of stuff. HJ
