@Hugh_Manatee It's a great stove to use. Have fun. Remember that the trick to soldering the leg on is clean adjoining surfaces and patient preparation. Cheers Tony
@Tony Press I noticed this topic more because of the sheer amount of views it had. I had to come in and see what all the fuss was about. I can see why, it's a very nice stove and another very nice fettle by you. I decided to have a look at a stove I'd posted and was mildly surprised. Well, more than mildly https://classiccampstoves.com/forums/primus-no-717.580/
I found one of these but with steel tank originally painted coleman gold like the suitcase stoves bottom of tank completely rusted out so I'm dismantling it for parts burner now on a monitor tank assy which i think was the basis of the british solus about to try heating and removing pump and legs my aetna blowlamp can be used for the first time
I would like to refer a Solus problem to Tony and other expert owners as follows. I have a Canadian Solus 518 cleaned up from a rough state when it was discovered in a shed, just the tank. A burner from a Valor stove has been fitted but so far no new seals or pips etc The pump works perfectly and the stove fired up in a lively way but the strong flames were about 50% yellow. My question is, does the yellow flaming indicate an air leak somewhere? What were the seals etc that you fitted Tony on your Solus and where did you fit them? Would welcome any suggestions. Best wishes David
@David Burnett First, is your Solus fitted with the Coleman pump and check valve at the bottom of the pump tube? Second, the yellow flame could be either burning off crud, or an enlarged jet in the nipple. Third, you should replace any rubber seals and washers with Viton ones; ensure your leather pump cup is up to scratch or replace it; change the fibre washer(s) on the burner, and make sure any lead washer is working properly or replace it. Tony
Many thanks. I will try Fettlebox for the bits. When stove owners say that their stove is running rich, what do they mean? Does this refer to an enlarged jet and yellow in the flames?
Running rich means too much fuel, relative to air. An enlarged jet is one cause. It’s best to run your stove for a few boils to make sure it’s not just burning off crud, or you’ve got a loose part. I always test by putting a cleaned pot on the stove and see, after a boil, whether there is soot that can be removed by wiping a finger across the bottom of the pot. Tony
I shall try this. I shall not further contribute to the thread about the amazing US prototype stove. The word that the writer of the instructions needed was not shall but should. Shall I compare thee to A Summer’s day? Or Shall we Dance?
But no… “Thou shalt not covert thy neighbour’s instructions”. Much more direct that “You should not…”. Anyway, good luck with your Solus. I’m happy help you through your restoration. Cheers Tony
Your offer to help thr Solus project is more than welcome. I have two difficulties to contend with, one is my lack of technical ability and the other is that I haven’t worked out how to post photos to the club. The problems I have encountered seem nearly all to be about the NRVs. I have been struggling with two Monitor Regal Roarers ( brand new crudely made, weird) and a 96 Manaslu ( bought new years ago from Base Camp, used for pancake making for grandchildren) something amiss down the pump tube,. The two Soluses both now work, one is going well ( the one with the Coleman burner we found on a Parasene hybrid) the other is fitted with a Valor burner and flames orange yellow powerfully. The jet maybe knackered? Have you come across Nicholas Shakespeare an author friend who has a house by the sea in Tasmania? Did you see Nick Grainger’s book? Best wishes David
Let’s start with the problem of photos first. What device do you use to access CCS? What format do you store your photos in? JPEG, jpg, or something else? What device to you use to take photos? *** Nicholas Shakespeare is great writer. He wrote a very interesting piece about an incident at Broken Hill (Australia). He is well read and respected here in Oz. I’ve not read Grainger’s Voyage of the Aegre. Tony
Re photography. I use my iPad to take photos and my daughter sent one to the CCS by uploading it or downloading it or something. That’s the photo of my Radius No 6 which appears next to my messages. I don’t know what a jpeg is. The daughter aforementioned is coming here shortly to take me to London so I will show her your questions. While she is here I will try to grasp instructions how to do things.
@David Burnett At the bottom of the dialogue box you are typing into when you reply to this message, you will see a button saying “Upload a File”. Press on that button, go to your photos, and mark the photo(s) you want to upload. When they upload, click on “Full Size” to load a full sized photo in your post. Press carriage return between photos… You can practice this in the Practice thread on this site. Well worth the effort: Practice Forum Cheers Tony
“Carriage return” is old typewriter language. It’s the “Return” key on your keypad, bottom right. It puts a paragraph spacing between lines (or photos. Tony
