    Hi Guys
I’ve just received a PRIMUS 71 (from Fleabay) with the code AS which apparently means 1953. It has been sprayed black at some point, quite nicely actually but the outer transfer/sticker is a bit scrappy. I’d like to take it back to original if possible. Would electrolysis remove the paint? I’ve only done it once on a rusty old 8R and it worked a treat.
I’m going to make my own transfers, it needs the inside one anyway.
The fuel cap washer/seal was cardboard but the stove worked ok albeit with a slightly yellow tipped flame. I’ll be ordering a new jet and cap washer tomorrow. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

@Dave Gidman it should strip the paint depending a bit on the type of paint, but might take a little while, so be patient and get all your terminals nice and clean to get maximum effect. Use a basic battery charger 10 amp .
    Good luck
    Nick

Brilliant, that is the positive answer I was hoping for. I Just wondered if it’d be a waste of time. I’ll give it a go. Can’t hurt. Thankyou nmp.

Hello Dave, this is a bit of a grey area but there are two main sizes of this type of nipple/jet-0.23mm used on small petrol stoves such as yours (aside-and the lipstick type burners of 1/2-pint paraffin stoves) and 0.32mm orifice diameter used on one-pint and two-pint stoves.

The 71 will fuel best with a 0.23mm jet- A worn jet or a replacement at 0.32mm will overfuel giving the yellow tips descirbed.

The difficulty is that 0.23mm jets are not available new, and old stock items are hard to find.

I’ve ordered a nipple from Basecamp (hopefully) I did see a post about a mixup with sizes. They advertise the two sizes and I ordered the 0.23mm so we’ll have to see, I don’t think this jet is too bad. I also ordered the fuel cap gasket/seal, the one in the stove was cardboard which wouldn’t have helped, and a key chain. I got a nice clock key off EBay in leu of the correct one. The Electrolysis is working a treat which is more than I can say for my charger, I have to turn it back on every hour or so, but with elbow grease and scotchbrite the paint is coming off slowly.
Is the tin bare metal or is it painted silver/aluminium? I can’t tell in the pictures on the stove reference gallery. I’ve printed the decals on water slide paper in the correct size and I’m just waiting for some clear acrylic spray sealer so as soon as this electrolysis has done its stuff I won’t be far off done.

My mistake, Base Camp do have them in stock as you say but not cheap!

The current involved with electrolysis can vary widely depending on a lot of factors, and it's quite easy to kill cheaper battery chargers, hopefully yours will go the distance.

The tins were painted from new.

Here’s (hopefully) my before and after photo’s. Electrolysis worked a treat. Got some Rust-oleum paint and some wet transfer paper etc and thanks to you good folks I’ve brought it back. Just got to cure the yellow tipped flame now.

I’ve heard mention of a small shaped washer in front of the packing on the control spindle? My packing is looking a bit rough so I’ll replace that but I’ve got no washer.

Hi, I am about to try the same electrolysis approach with a Primus 71 tin I recently purchased of eBay. Can you advise how long did you leave it in the solution? Also which rust oleum paint did you use?
    Cheers
    Julian

Hi Julian, it obviously depends on the state of the tin but I think I left mine overnight. Other things have done in a few hours, 3 or 4. I bought an old battery charger with no cutouts etc so it’d just constantly chuck charge at the tin. There’s lots of variables I suppose but give it a few hours and see.
