Hello all I have become interested in electroplating for both corrosion removal and surface Finnish restoration. do we have any experts using any of these methods. is it practical to do any of this at home thanks for your help Blaze
Electrolysis for rust removal I seen plenty about here, but I havent heard of anyone replating something except professionally.
Hi Blaze, to do this well requires specialist equipment, such as good voltage/current supply and control, temperature control, access to chemical analysis etc. Many of the chemical solutions used are extremely toxic to both humans and the environment and are subject to control by Factory Inspectorate and Health and Safety Authorities. There is also the potential for explosion once you start thinking that anodising solutions might be nice... There are some systems available to small companies and amateurs but they tend to be expensive and limited in application. Electro-less plating solutions for example. Sorry if this sounds rather negative but if it was straightforward more of us would have tried it. Best Regards, Kerophile.
I agree with the above: unless an ardent amateur self plating simply does not warrant the much effort, time and money, even if the results were fine. Which is unlikely the first time. It pays to look for a company that does not specialize in one-off plating (expensive), but often is accepting the odd item(s) to come along with their regular plating orders. Realise that the quality of plating lies in the preparation, and most companies simply lack these skills nowadays. Good luck, Mike
